    Remastering Remasters

I'm an audio engineer, DJ and critical listener, as I have been for way too many years. I have been a Beatles fan since 1962 (very telling). I am not an unfair critic of anyone else's work, but after buying The Beatle's Remastered White Album to fill out my 1987 collection, I was not overly impressed with the implications of it somehow being so much greater than the original CD's that I would have to buy it again if I already had it.

It is a good remastering. They clearly used up-to-date equipment to add clarity and reduce noise, but it wasn't bright in timbre. It was VERY clean! I can hear master tape hiss a mile away, and it was clearly absent on these CD's. Drums and guitars were very natural sounding, not gritty as digital tends to do. But that was the extent to which I was impressed, and novices used to digital music for 25 years now, may not think even as much of it. In some places, it sounded like mp3. That may be because that is how "well" it was recorded originally...analog. Those tapes degauss after a while and the highs go away permanently. Still much better than Neil Diamond's AAD CD transfers. Many of us would recognize artifice if they tried it, so they were boxed in from both sides.

I can't play at least one of the disks on my computer monitors, because it is a multimedia disk--bummer. What will I play it on in ten years? I don't like that "trick" of them giving us something "additional" so we can't play it on our computer.

The White Album was entertaining, but hardly dance music. It carries several hallowed standards such as "Blackbird" and "Revolution", and "Yer Birthday", but I hope that the Beatles magic will strike a new generation and impress them as I was 40 some years ago.

time to buy the beatles again!

yes, the remaster makes a positive difference. the mix is clearer -particularly the bass guitar and percussion. The packaging is beautiful:a cd gatefold with new photos and notes, pullout poster, and embossed slipcase.for newcomers as well as old school fans-this is a must-have!

It's the white album, praise seems redundant

i find it amusing that in this brave new age of digital media and internet access to everything that a record released in november of 1968 is the most interesting and listenable piece of work that has (re)surfaced in a good while. every possible way of praising the beatles in the english language has been explored already, so i'll just say that this is a worthy addition to any music collection in any medium. those four had some talent.

    My Favorite Beatle Album

I know I wrote that Sgt. Peppers was ground breaking, but this is still my favorite Beatle Album. I also know that it is probably the least of all of their albums the group did together as a group, that is, each member did their own songs and had the others play along with them as they recorded them. Yet some of my favorite songs come from this album; Back In the USSR; Dear Prudence; I'm So Tired; Black Bird; Julia; Birthday; Helter Skelter; Long Long Long; Savory Truffle; Revolution I; Cry Baby Cry; are only some stand outs on a great album. I will admit, it is not the the most artistic, or creative, such as Pepper, or Revolver, but I love listening to it, and from the the first time I listened to it, receiving it for Christmas when I was in High School, I loved it, and don't think a month has gone by without listening to it since, something I can not say for any other Beatle's album, another must have for any music fan, much less Beatle fan. Great stereo sound, even before the remaster, and a completely different mono album!
