    I Also Recommend:

Black Sheep One Hits the mark on Greg Pappy Boyington

I recommend reading Baa Baa Black Sheep written by Boyington himself first this will give you an idea into the man whom Black Sheep on is About. It will show you the effects of drinking that so much consumed his life. Bruce Gamble did an excellent job in making sense of the life of one of the greatest Pilots of WWII. If you are an aviation historian then you must read this.

    A reviewer

This book goes into a lot of detail sometimes to much. I couldn't really couldn't get into the book because of all the rabbit trails the author puts in. I didn't end up finishing it so maybe it gets better at the end.

    Praise for Black Sheep One

This is the definitive biography of Gregory 'Pappy' Boyington. It 'sets the record straight' on many aspects of 'Pappy's' life and presents the reader with a new appreciation of what kind of man he was. It is informative, enlightening and compelling reading.

    Understanding Boyington

Overall, a very decent and informative book on the Ace of WWII. I have read most of the books written on the Black Sheep, and I would say, other than Baa Baa Black Sheep, this is the one I have liked the most. It gives your a very good understanding of him.

great biography of a troublesome hero

Pappy Boyington was one of the best-known fighter pilots of World War II. 'Show me a hero,' he famously said, 'and I'll show you a bum.' He set out to prove his own maxim. Bruce Gamble wrote a good history of VMF-214, the Black Sheep Squadron. Now he's crafted a magnificent biography of the man who created the squadron and led it in combat until he was shot down and taken prisoner. Buy it, read it, give a copy to your best friend.
