    Walk away

I was excited to read about the history of Louisiana but ended up annoyed by the lack of anything lovely or hopeful, just the unrelenting hardness of an ungracious landscape traversed by an inconsistent character. I put this book down and picked it back up more times than I can count, telling myself that I was no quitter and that it had to get 'better', but it was just hard, then harder and then it just broke my spirit to read, even though I finished it.

Two stars just because the writer is not terrible at composition, but I had no empathy for any of the characters, nor did they progress in any sort of logical fashion. I didn't trust the historical references because the characters were at once renegade and unremarkable.

I can accept that this is a man's book because it was so unsatisfying to anything I wanted to get from reading it.
