Treasures From the Vaults
Here are a few thoughts on the Bootleg Series. Disc 1 is comprised of acoustic numbers that have more energy than the classic Dylan songs from that period often heard on radio. Check out Rambling, Gambling Willie and House Carpenter. Disc 2 chronicles the switch from acoustic to electric and continues up to Blood on the Tracks. The mid 60s numbers are mostly good. The alternate take of It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry is excellent. The two Basement Tapes numbers and Tangled Up in Blue are poorly recorded. Disc 3 continues to 1989 and is full of lost treasures like Seven Days, Blind Willie McTell, and Foot of Pride. Some of Dylan’s best 80s work is on this disc. This is a good companion to the Biograph box set.
