This is an astonishingly good read about a corner of the U.S. rarely written about. It is the Latino ANGELA'S ASHES, written with such heartbreaking hilarity I couldn't put it down. An important book - read it.

Terrible

Well written, but it is 350 pages of feeling sorry for himself and blaming everyone possible for his misgivings. He needs to grow up and take responsibility for himself. I wasted time reading this I can never get back.

Exquisitely written, nakedly exposed, Martinez's story is agonizing, heartbreaking, and rendered with breathtaking language. This is an important book about a far corner of U.S. told by a poor, rough-neck kid from the barrio who writes like a daemon.

That other reviewer (smallville) is a thoroughly illiterate, self-hating idiot. This book was fantastically well-written and incredibly moving. Word of warning: it's written so well, you need a high degree of literacy and functionality with - GASP! - English to fully appreciate what Martinez did here, and if you come at it with the degree of stupidity, self-loathing and struggle with verbs that "smallville" has exhibited here, then you will not enjoy what is now being regaled as a triumph of memoir out of the barrio. Completely recommended if you love a good, uncomfortable and honest story, or stay out if you're an illiterate mule.

How many of us Hispanics born and raised in Texas have left to find America elsewhere. I'm glad someone has finally told the story. Great book.

    Beautifully written and vivid

One of the best books I have read in a long while. Sad, funny, grim, ironic, and brutally honest. Highly recommended.

Loved it! Couldn't put it down. Lots of insight to living conditions in the area.

The story of this family deals in a "hands on" way the way that life goes in this border town area. I think you would like it.

    Great book. Really enjoyed it.

Growing up in Brownsville myself, it was easy to relate to some of the experiences and feelings expressed by June. I had to drive by Oklahoma ave. the other day. It appears not much has changed. Great book June.

Mr. Martinez shares his gift for story telling. His story. A Texas border town story. He reels you in and takes you on an emotional ride. Thanks to his writing abilities your heart will race, your eyes will moisten, and your gut will wrench with both nausea and laughter as you fly through the pages. A US history culture story worth reading, worth sharing.
