Review Tally - based out of 5

OVERALL: 4 STARS

Story/Plot: 5 - I have to be honest here - going into The Clockwork Scarab, I was a little hesitant. It was promising a lot to be honest - Sherlock Holmes's niece, Bram Stoker's sister, Irene Adler, time-travel, steampunk & it was a mystery. I see you nodding your head too, but it all worked. Before I was finished with the book, I was already checking to see if the next book in the series was already in the works.

Re-read Value: 3 - 50/50. Even though I enjoyed the story, I don't know if I will re-read it right away.

Continue Series: 4 - As I mentioned up there in the story section, I am already anticipating the next book in this interesting series.

Characters: 4 - I did enjoy the characters and I cannot wait for the growth which happens for characters over a series. This book was a good introduction and I cannot wait to learn more about them. I will be honest though - I have a slight pet peeve about love triangles and that whole "team so & so" or "team so & so" and although it appears there might be a little of that in the future of this series, I am hoping it doesn't become a serious issue.

Cover: 4 - Almost a 4.5 to be honest. I think it is an interesting cover, it fits the title and the storyline. You do get a steampunk vibe from it, so it fits nicely.

Genre Fulfillment: 5 - Steampunk elements, check. Sherlockian mystery, check. Young Adult elements, check.

Personal Involvement 4: - I did enjoy this story and look forward to continuing the series. I do have a few issues - the triangle issue, which I find tedious to say the least - and there is an issue with the book and how it ended, which makes me wonder and hope for a REALLY good resolution. Also I wish to see if my theories pan out or if Ms. Gleason is going to surprise me. Which will make me change this review possibly into a 5. I love when authors shock me.

Mina (short for the horrific Alvermina) Holmes, niece of Sherloc

Mina (short for the horrific Alvermina) Holmes, niece of Sherlock, and Evaline Stoker, sister of Bram, are called upon by the Crown, through its representative Irene Adler, to solve the murders of several young affluent women under mysterious circumstances. They all seem to be connected by the clockwork scarabs left near each corpse, apparently tokens of a secret society. The two young ladies alternatively butt heads and partner with Scotland Yard and other less savory elements of society to solve the mystery. Along the way, they have to overcome their own insecurities and put aside their petty rivalry to become true partners in the investigation.

As a fan of Gleason's adult fiction (Gardella Vampire Chronicles), I was pleased with this first installment in her new YA series. I enjoyed the references to the Gardella Chronicles throughout, and I also enjoyed the steampunk elements. I was somewhat let-down by the ending. You're left not really knowing whodunit, although I definitely have a strong suspicion. I was also left wanting to see more of Stoker and Holmes and their various acquaintances, so I look forward to book 2.
