Great Read - But Not While Snuggling Next To Your Honey
'The Country Of Marriage' by Anthony Giardina is a quite an experience. This is a book that questions the institution of marriage not by recounting the attrocities that can occur in such a relationship but rather by showing the suffocation that often results from such a union. The book is a collection of short stories that recount the marriage of suburban men (a sort of desperate husbands - only one is a househusband) and their resignations to the lives they lead. Mr. Giardina uses quite powerful imagery to convey the desperation of these men by showing their unexpressed desires and how they cope with them. Some lead to alcoholism, adultery, and in one case, even murder. I recommend the book because the author doesn't manipulate the reader into pitying the men but rather expresses their emotions in a matter of fact way.Was this review helpful?
