The book is about a young boy who falls through an enchanted portal to a parallel world, Abydonne. There, Cory befriends a young prince and rescues him, is adopted by the king, and quickly apprenticed to the royal court wizard, Math the Ancient. When Cory casts the spell to summon a familiar, instead of a cat, hawk, or owl answering his call, it is the golden dragon, Benythonne! His master quickly realizes that Cory Avalon is the boy of the prophecy, who will defeat Asmodeus and destroy his stronghold of Abollydd.
The original manuscript was Lawrence Cohen's senior project for his bachelor's degree in Creative Writing from New Jersey University. (He got an A+ for his novel, and of course, free editing from the college's English department.)
