Should be more obviously stated that the "Elf" is not included. Kind of disappointed when I received the package only to find it was just the costume.

I understood the elf was not in the package, just the book and outfit. That's fine. I was very disappointed, however to read the book and find the birthday elf "tradition"  turns out to be very involved, the creation of a special chair, like a birthday throne. This creates a huge expectation that the child will have an extravagant chair for his/her birthday in order to follow the book's story.  It really puts a lot of pressure on parents to follow through with what happens in the story.  This is so far fetched from the beautiful simplicity of the Christmas Elf story. We were glad we read the story ahead of sharing it with our granddaughter. We were warned about the chair issue and, after reading the book, decided not to use the book at all. The birthday appearance of the elf alone was enough to thrill the 4 year old. Creating a throne-like chair is a totally unnecessary gimmick that serves no purpose. Something more manageable would have been an appropriate item to craft for the story, such as an empty card stock frame ready to hold a picture of the elf with the birthday child would have been sufficient, and a great "souvenir" of the elf's birthday visit. So disappointing when lack of judgement pushes something overboard, which spoils a good thing.

Do not buy this! It's bad enough to have to move the @@@@@ elf for a month at Christmas! Why punish yourself 2x a year? I rue the day we bought that elf!
