My daughter and I love Kathryn Lasky and have full sets of her other stories. HORSES OF THE DAWN will no doubt join the ranks of popular Lasky books, although I think it will be more appealing to the upper middle grade audience due to the graphic nature of the storyline. That said, it is a powerful and engrossing story. The animals become real and precious to us--as always--which leads to a personal investment in the satisfying outcome. My daughter loved this book and we are both looking forward to book 2.

I was disappointed. I convinced my son to choose this over a fighting book and instead got a story wherein all humans are bad - even those who cared for the horses but had no power to help them. Repeatedly all humans were labelled as greedy. Then is described the horses arriving to see a human heart in a stone bowl and the body parts and bodies of multiple people spread around amidst the bloody ground. Only the horses save an infant from sacrifice and shortly thereafter a horse's head is cut off and paraded around. All "gods" are spurned and scorned as if belief in them is stupid. This is not subject matter I think is appropriate for the recommended middle school age child, but I don't know that the writing is up to the junior high level. Sorry, I was really sad that such a seemingly appealing story would put such horrid images and thoughts in my child's mind at this young age.

    Good book but

Very bad language. I love the plot but spoiler alert! My favorite horse dies in the end. But estrella meaning star has become my favorite name. Good book, but bad language.

    Ya know...

I havent read the book yet, but just the words "two-legs" gave it away. There are others in this book, but kathryn lasky, if you are reading this, then please make more Gaurdians of Gahoole, or Wolves of the Beyond, aka (spoiler alert) Wolves of the Distant Blue. ;)
