I liked this book, but it is a dark and slightly tragic story. If you're expecting romance, find another book.

    3.5 out of 5

My experience of Megan Hart to date has been with her oft-deliciously dirty erotic romance, so I was intrigued to see this title marketed as more of a straight romantic fiction novel.

I suppose, like myself, most will know Megan for the erotic stuff, so if you are expecting one of those, this is not one. I'd probably shelf The Favor in the fiction with romantic elements basket. So what did I think of The Favor? I actually enjoyed this, despite it being a departure from my usual romances.

Megan Hart has done a really good job of creating a raw and often painful portrayal of how mistakes and secrets can rule your life even decades on. Janelle Decker and the Tierney boys, Gabe, Anthony and Michael were always a tight group. However an accident (and more than a few secrets) ends with one permanently damaged, one running away and family relationships broken.

Upon Janelle's return twenty years later, and despite their best intentions, Janelle and Gabe revisit the teenage romance interrupted all those years ago. However the dark secrets of the past have a way of coming back to haunt them.

The use of flashbacks to tell the story did get a little confusing on occasion, but generally was pretty well done. The romance (and by extension, the sexy times) were pretty light on. However, this wasn't really an issue for me with this book not being such a strict romance.

All in all, this was definitely different to any Megan Hart I've read before, however I have to say it's a departure from the norm that I really enjoyed.

Note: I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
