Thirteen-year-old Ivy Hart will melt your heart with her view of the world and what is going on around her. As a child growing up in 1958 on a tobacco farm in North Carolina, poor, naive and at the age where she is not quite a woman and not quite a child, Ivy tells of the events surrounding the birth of her unmarried sister's child in a time when this is one of the greatest taboos of society.

With The First Lie, Author Diane Chamberlain allows Ivy to tell her story in her own words and with her own voice, adding to the charm, enchantment and emotional power of this short read, while leaving the reader eager for "the rest of the story."

    Setting the stage!

Loved the e-short story setting the stage for Necessary Lies (which I have already read --an advanced reading copy—and loved it)! It was nice to go back and learn more about Mary Ella and of course Ivy—small town with big secrets and lies. Would highly recommend both! Diane never disappoints!

    LOVED this book

It's the prequel to Necessary Lies by the same author and sets up the next book very well. It's not long, but that doesn't matter, because if it catches you you'll be buying Necessary lies right away.

    Great Preview

This was a great preview of what following in Necessary Lies. I have read all of Diane Chamberlain's book, even going so far as to order the older books through Amazon.

This short story helped set the stage for the author's full-leng

This short story helped set the stage for the author's full-length novel Necessary Lies.  I just finished reading both and I'm so glad that I started with The First Lie.  It really pulled me in and made me want to know the characters and what would happen to them.  This is the first time I have ever bought a prequel, but it won't be the last.
