A Study of Fertile Ambiguity and Ambiguous Fertility
Gole is one of few scholars to explore the situation of Muslim women in Turkey - the only Muslim member of NATO and the only Muslim country that has enshrined the progress of women as a pillar of state ideology. Gole argues that far from being a peripheral issue, the debate over veiling is where the rubber meets the road in the dialectic of Islam and modernization in Turkey. She makes a poetic and persuasive case that the headscarf, regarded by Turkey's westernized elite as a banner of benighted tradition, is in fact the standard of a newly conscious group of women whose emergence as a political and social force will transform Turkish society for the better. Her subversion of the standard line of the Turkish elite - that devout Muslim women can only be liberated by force - will be a delight to anyone who believes that freedom is its own precondition. Was this review helpful?
