I enthusiastically recommend The Good Doctor, a book which is an informative and heartwarming hybrid of medical ethics education and family history storytelling. The author, Dr. Barron Lerner, is an experienced and noted physician who is also a medical historian and bioethics expert. He gives the reader an inside look at medical decision-making across the generations, intertwined with a beautiful story about a father and son, their love and respect for each other, and their contrasting approaches to providing the best care for their patients. I was emotionally drawn into the story of Dr. Lerner’s family journey and relationships, all the while learning a great deal about the evolution of medical ethics. In short, The Good Doctor moved and educated me, and I believe I am both a more informed patient as well as a more thoughtful clinician (psychologist) as a result of reading this excellent book.
