One of the publications I look forward to each year is the Hardball Times because each edition provides us with baseball knowledge which cannot be found anywhere else. The 2011 edition is no exception. Here's a sample of conclusions from 2011 studies: Craig Wright: "The further you go back before the maturation process is complete [25], the more vulnerable the [pitching] shoulder is . . ." Meaning the younger the arm, the more careful teams must be. Sean Smith: "Catchers have significant impact of the performance of pitchers they catch." John Walsh: ". . . umpires do favor the home team . . . [There is a] large difference in strike zone size in 3-0 [versus] 0-2 counts . . ." Tom Tango: "We find that each year of age [above age 27] will impact your performance by 0.15 wins. So you have two otherwise identical players in terms of past performance, one who is entering the season at the age of 27 and another at the age of 37, then expect the 37-year-old player to put up a performance that is 1.5 fewer wins than the 27-year old." The articles by Walsh and Tango were alone worth the price of the book. Both were great research articles.
