Gold bug bites but turns out to be a lot of work
3 large volumes, about 40 pounds. Alfred Doten gets on a ship in Massachusetts, sails around the tip of SA and makes his way into the Sierra gold settlements. Interesting writing that apparently some pastoral decendant who got the journals decided to edit. (the f-word was apparently in quite common usage in 1849 also). Relates all sorts of viginettes about life and maturity, as well as participation in various aspects of municipal politics and development, both in Nevada & California. Things that modern readers might not think existed then did, and the diary was mostly well written, except for spelling errors and blackouts prior to publishing. Very interesting and insightful of human nature. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
