I would definitely recommend you at least glance through this book before you shell out money for a juicer and definitely before you start a detox. It is really useful in helping you identify great veggies and plants to help you meet your dietary needs during a juice cleansing or detox. The author also gives useful alternative and tips if you cannot manage a 7-day or 3 full day detox.

With the juicing trend “sweeping the nation,” only “raw juice” and no bottled juice will do because  pasteurization destroys “live enzymes and natural antibiotics.”  For fiber take “a tablespoon or so of the pulp”  and “stir it into your juice.”  Juice can be made from fruits and vegetables “getting ready to spoil.”  Parsley is “rich in antioxidants” that “oxygenate the blood,” sage increases “cognitive function,” and ginger “blocks” serotonin, “a chemical your brain and stomach produce when you’re nauseated.”

First, I will say that the recipes are absolutely fantastic. The authors took care to provide you with lots of flavor combinations, so chances are there will be a few juices you can try. The charts providing nutritional information for the ingredients are also super helpful. However, there is a significant bias in the juicing advice the authors give. If you take a look at the references section, you'll find the authors mostly cite juicing websites, not independent research. The risks of juicing are glossed over, so the book really does need to be supplemented with additional research for a comprehensive understanding of juicing's actual benefit.

Some information from the first few chapters as well as format of the recipes were very wordy and redundant, but all in all, this is a great beginner's guide to juicing. There are very helpful tables and charts to determine what ingredients best support the health benefits you need. The photos they use, while few, make the juices look delicious. I can't wait to try them all!

This book doesn’t make the wild claims of some juicing fanatics (Lose 20 pounds in 2 weeks! Flush away toxins!), but it does offer practical nutritional advice and plenty of tasty juice recipes. It will also help you choose a juicer if you haven’t already done so. However, consuming nothing but juice for 15 days, as outlined in the book, may not allow adequate protein intake. I would only go a few days without solid food.

Cons of the book: stock photos were used instead of actual photo

Cons of the book: stock photos were used instead of actual photos, even for the recipes which could have benefited from some visual evidence; many of the chapters proponing to educate were actually very biased; lacking in substantial evidence (i.e. too many citations of “many studies”); and, finally, no reference to cost of the lifestyle. Pros of the book: one of the most comprehensive on the topic; the recipe list is long and varied; and the nutritional information is much appreciated.

The Juicing Diet: Drink Your Way to Weight Loss, Cleansing, Heal

The Juicing Diet: Drink Your Way to Weight Loss, Cleansing, Health, and Beauty delivers an inclusive breakdown of the increasingly popular contemporary diet trend known as “Juicing”. The book comprehensively explores the extensive health advantages associated with this particular diet in addition to its practical and easy implementation (in terms of purchasing juicing devices and wide variety of juicing recipes). From “Strawberry Watermelon Juice” to “Sweet Red Pepper Broccoli Juice,” the best features of this book are the prospective mouth-watering fruit and vegetable blends and the refreshingly straightforward flavor of language (most notably – an Index comprised of health-related definitions and measuring caloric content).
