Excellent arrangements neatly executed by solid, no- frills (though imaginitive) musicians ; absolutely personal, spare vocal style; and a bunch of song which are worth knowing or redescovering. This is jazz singing at his best and a plain, factual demonstration that You don't need to complicate matters if you want to draw the line with more commercialized pop music. Maybe a song or two could have been left out and other ones, from the composer's fund added to the compilation. And maybe Maxine isn't up to the task in compostions (''Come Back to Me'', e.g.) which require (though this may be debatable) more powerful lungs than hers. But , apart from these minor flaws, this is really one of the best pieces of american song singing (and playing) you ever going to hear in your life. Was this review helpful?
