This ESV study bible gets welcome first-time treatment from scholar John MacArthur.

...John MacArthur has had a long and successful career as a conservative theologican and commentator and was under no compulsion to make this recent release a specifically Lutheran-oriented bible. He is known, among other things, as the author of a number of successful prior Study Bibles in other translations (i.e., bible versions). This was yet another huge undertaking for MacArthur, and as always he brought it off brilliantly... There is no denying that theologically, MacArthur is conservative/evan-gelical/dispensa-tionalist. As such, a compatible interpretation comes to the fore when he deals with Last Things. For instance, in to Book of Revelations, Chapter 20, verse 2, "[An angel] seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years." MacArthur's take on this verse is to comment at some length on Premillennarianism, Postmillennarianism, and Amillennarianism. Many modern study bibles would not bother, or would mention the terms only in passing... Nonetheless, does the new MacArthur ESV Study Bible work for me? Yes! Even though the Doctrinal section is very dispenstionalist, I like the book anyway because its notes are so solid, and because MacArthur is too good a scholar to squeeze in his views where they are irrelevant... I would think twice before assigning it to a non-Evangelical bible study group, though; and would have to ask myself honestly if the class is up to the fairly demanding reading level of the commentaries, however fun for me and other scholars who's already "done" prior study bibles... Newbies to the ESV translation will find it congenial enough if they are familiar with NASB, NRSV, or HCSB (or NIV). The dust-jacketed model I review here is smyth-sewn and will lay flat when open on a desk or table. I could find no manufacturing defect-and it is made in the USA...

Very roughly, this bible compared to recent study bibles: 1. The Missouri Synod's 2009 Lutheran Study Bible is also based on the ESV. Its notes follow almost every verse, and usu. (not always) are compatible LCMS' orthodox Lutheran doctrine. It is not quite as scholarly as the MacArthur, and at times seems developed for family use, with a little creeping "life application" concern sometimes apparent... 2. The ELCA Lutheran Study Bible (2009)is based on the NRSV. There is relatively little doctrine apparent... in controversial situations calling for interp., many verses aren't commented on at all! Flaky... 3. Two years ago Crossway released an "in-house" ESV Study Bible. Some people love it; others have criticized it for instances of faulty binding. I could not find evidence of a single author or editor, or a group, readily credited. With the MacArthur Study Bible, you have the pros and cons of one author with a consistent point of view... 4. On October 1, 2010, B&H Publishers released the Holman Christian Standard Bible-Study Bible. Just as Crossway owns the ESV translation, B&H owns the HCSB.Their study bible is conservative/evan-gelical in tone but not Millennarian as such. Its chief virtues areis the translation and the joy of experiencing "total design concept" incl. a wealth of boxes, charts, and fresh computer-designed supplements to text. Great maps, too. A pitiful "topical" Concordance compared to this ESV's 77-pager...

I recommend this Study Bible for people of at least average reading ability and evangelical outlook; c

This is a great study Bible!

I have many study Bibles, however I find that I turn to the MacArthur Study Bible for John MacArthur's insight every time. His clarification and insight on scripture is unmatched in IMHO. I use this Bible for all my studies and carry it as my main Bible to church. (I have the eBook as well as leather bound version). The eBook version allows me to quickly move from study notes and cross references to main text.

    Highly RECOMMENED!!

From the cover to the detailed introduction it is a great bible. The print size is about a 10 so if you have a hard time reading that size I wouldn't recommend it. The numbers of the chapters are baby blue and some of the charts...but it is not difficult to read or see like some reviews i read, it's just not black. My favorite part is the detailed historic background and the notes in the beginning of the books and chapters. I also have a life application bible and I like how both studybibles have different perspectives of some of the scriptures...such as the life application applies it to how we should handle circumstances to our present life; while the MacArthur focuses on deeper understanding of the culture when it was written to create a picture of the weight of the words....Its a great additon to my bibles. You won't be disappointed. And it has at the back near appendix grouped scriptures based on Godly principles such as faith, kingdom, wisdom...etc!!! My only thing is I wish Jesus' words were red but I guess bc its not in KJ they didn't....but the bible still deserves 5!!!

    Great study bible

The MacArthur study Bible will always have a comment worth considering on every chapter and nearly every verse.

Unfortunately, Barnes and Noble is a poor choice to find this. Try searching for "MacArthur Study Bible ESV" and see if you get anywhere close to this page. On the other hand a search at Amazon or even Google will take you directly to the correct item. BN, how can I buy a book from you if I can't find it.

Also, I can't buy this on my Nook, but for $9.99 I can download it instantly on the Kindle.

Please BN, give the Amazonians some fair competition so we have a choice on where to buy books a year from now!

    Excellent Reference Study Bible

After giving my first copy of this Bible to a friend, and using a different study Bible, I realized I really missed and needed the material this MacArthur Study Bible provides so I bought this replacement. The page by page commentaries are historically accurate and add insight and substance to each topic. I would like a more extensive Concordance, but that would require a much larger book. The physical structure of this Bible is rugged and print is easy to read.
