What Would You Do to Save a Child?

The Neurology of Angels is a powerful novel exploring health care issues through the intertwined lives of several people for whom drug availability is a daily personal dilemma. Two parents whose children suffer from rare and fatal illnesses ¿ one with an existing but expensive cure ¿ one with no cure at all ¿ play tug-of-war over laws and regulations and resources, while a scientist-turned-entrepreneur faces heart-rending choices about how and when his miracle drug will be used ¿ and who will receive it. This is a powerful novel about important contemporary issues. How do factors like Medicare, generic drugs, and international sales impact the availability of drugs for the populace? The complex interaction of FDA mandates, legislation, and investment opportunities essentially control who in this country has access to the newest drugs ¿ and who does not. The FDA¿s concern is with scientific proof of effectiveness and safety, and the pleas of individuals who might die waiting for that proof go unheard. Legislators make decisions based on human reactions to health care problems faced by Americans, without truly understanding the economic fallout of their actions. Investors pour their money into profitable companies, forcing decisions that favor treatments for the common and the many over treatments for the rare and the few. And at the heart of this novel, a handful of people with good intentions unknowingly work at cross-purposes in an attempt to save these two children and thousands like them.
