Small fish count
Greg Willits presents the nuts and bolts of "The New Evangelization" from a wealth of experience. He is director of Evangelization and Family Life Ministries for the Archdiocese of Denver. He is also deeply involved in Catholic media, notably Twitter, Facebook, and The New Evangelizers web site.
The New Evangelization and You is based on Church documents and Scripture, all cited in chapter-by-chapter notes. To complement these formal sources, Willits includes sidebars called "New Evangelizers in Action" in each of the book's 12 chapters. These stories feature ordinary individuals modeling elements of the New Evangelization: (1) renewed spiritual devotion and efforts in catechesis, (2) living our faith, and (3) sharing our faith with others.
Willits also describes his personal insights on the New Evangelization. He tells about annual fishing trips with his brother, emphasizing the planning and knowledge that lead to success in catching striped bass. The same kind of preparation is required for evangelization (fishing for men). In this case the task is sharing faith and drawing others to Christ, even if we feel unprepared. Willits points out that our efforts must not be limited to only "the big fish," that is, those who are extremely skeptical or hostile. "We oftentimes get caught up with converting all the atheists and non-Christians we know," he writes, "but what about the small fish in your life? In the New Evangelization, that's one of the most important questions you can ask."
