Oasis Guide to Asperger Syndrome: Advice, Support, Insight, and Inspiration

From the time that my son was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, at the age of 3 ½, our family knew that the idyllic life we had anticipated, would never be. At that time, in 1998, there wasn¿t a lot written about Asperser¿s Syndrome. Fortunately, I was just becoming a little more knowledgeable about the internet and quickly found my way to OASIS, the Online Asperger Syndrome Information and Support network. Barb Kirby was there from my first day to help smooth the pathways for other families as no one was really there to help smooth her way. She soon found Patty Romanowski Bashe and together they have created the complete guide to help families through the maze of diagnoses, acronyms, treatments, diets, and educational interventions applicable to those with Asperger¿s Syndrome, with the publishing of the OASIS Guide to Asperger Syndrome. Because of Barb¿s reputation, as soon as I saw this book, I knew that it would be thorough. What I didn¿t realize is how easy it would be to pick the book up and turn to any page and find information that would prove to be helpful to parents and other family members dealing with the overwhelming issues related to having a child on the autism spectrum. It is difficult to point to which section of the book is most helpful, because at different times, the various chapters have guided me to my child. At various times, I thought ¿Why me¿.why did this happen to ME?¿ But as this book states, ¿¿ the person who is working the hardest in all of this is ¿.your child¿. Easy to forget with my parental self-pitying. After I read that, I began to stop feeling sorry for myself and instead began thinking of myself as a ¿team member¿. From then, we could begin to regain some of our hopefulness and took on the challenge as a family team goal. This new edition has been brought up-to-date to include some of the newer ideas, research and treatments related to Asperger¿s Syndrome. They include various treatments, medications and discussions of a range of products available to families like ours that are desperately seeking the magic bullet for our child (there are none unfortunately). However what Barb and Patty have given us with this, is what I consider, the COMPLETE manual for all things related to Asperger¿s Syndrome; it is the bright ray of optimism that although there are certainly many difficult times ahead, there is also a lot of hope. There are many of us parents and professionals that Barb has brought together under the OASIS umbrella and are working arm in arm to find out more and share those successes with others. Thank you for the NEW ¿OASIS Guide to Asperger Syndrome¿. I thought the original was as good as it gets, but this one is even better! ~Ellen T

The Oasis Guide to Asperger Syndrome

This is 'THE' Book!!! The book We, as parents and caregivers of children with AS have been waiting for! This is by far, the most comprehensive Guide on Asperger Syndrome available! It is packed full of practical and technical information, insight, support and encouragement. A true Treasure of a Resource, keeping in mind the 'whole child' and family on every page. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. A real MUST HAVE! Thank you Barb and Patty!

Very thorough and well written book

This book is full of information to help people with and parents of those with Aspergers. Written by 2 moms of children with Aspergers, the book is written in terms we can all understand. The topics/chapters cover many details and are easy to follow. I found this book VERY useful and informative in finding the common symptoms within my own child. I highly recommend this book for anyone wishing to learn more about Aspergers Syndrome.

    I Also Recommend:

    informative

As someone being evaluated for Aspergers Syndrome soon, I thought I would check this book out to learn more about it. In my opinion, it was more of an advise book for parents rather than a book explaining about Aspergers. But that aside, it was very informative and I would recommend to anyone wanting to know more about Aspergers Syndrome, especially to those parents.

    Practical and Insight-filled

Filled with useful information on everything from initial diagnosis, interventions, treatments, medications, school issues, family issues and so much more. All presented with sound support from current research. A must for any parent whose child has been diagnosed with Asperger's/High Functioning Autism. The authors' personal insights and humor are a very nice touch. The reader is made aware of the struggles faced by many who are touched in one way or another by Asperger's. A very good resource for school professional libraries as an overview of the disorder, its complexities and challenges in meeting the needs of those with Asperger's/HFA.

The Quintessential Resource for Parents and Professionals dealing with children with Asperger Syndrome

Almost 3 years ago, my now 6 year old was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. The last few years have been a blur of acronyms, treatment plans, IEPs and lots of research into my son's world. Through the journey, the advice and guidance of these 2 authors have kept many parents going and have given hope and help to so many of us families maneuvering the tender relationships of Asperger families and those that work, play and love us. I am heartened that they have collaborated on such an important and timely book. And a masterpiece it is!! I couldn't put this book down as I read about the '54 Ways to Make the World a Better Place for Persons with Asperger Syndrome'. The help on school, social, and other issues are written in easily read style and format. I find myself carrying this book around with me, to read at red lights and while waiting for my little guy to finally 'tie his shoes'. This is a must buy for anyone who lives with and/or loves a child (or adult) with Asperger's Syndrome.
