A lot of shaming in this book

I'm not crazy about this book for a few reasons. First, the author uses language like "stubborn and opinionated" when referring to willful or stongminded kids. Okay, that's just PC and could be overlooked but there are other problems. Her idea of marching the kids back and forth to the potty TEN times for "potty drills" when they have a miss is a little extreme. How would you like it if you forgot to take out the trash and your husband "calmly and matter-of-factly" marched you to the curb and back ten times?

Regarding soiled pants she says to look "like you've smelled a skunk" and "make a sad face and pretend as if you are about to cry". She says to to this because "toddlers do not understand subtleties of tone and expression" but has no citation for this statement and in fact psychological research shows just the opposite: babies and toddlers are extremely sensitive and tuned in to adult body language. Some research even claims that exaggerated disgust for natural body functions could lead to other psych issues later in life.

And lastly, the author confuses the terms "punishment" and "negative reinforcement", claiming that the potty drills are negative reinforcement when in fact they are punishment.

Neg. reinforcement= removing a stimulus to encourage a behavior (such as turning off Barney if the child gets up from the potty)
Pos. reinforcement= adding a stimulus to encourage a behavior (such as giving a treat or cheering if the child goes potty)
Punishment = a stimulus to discourage a behavior (such as marching a child around to discourage accidents)

That may sound nit-picky but the back of the book claims to be based on extensive research; that implies scientific research. If you remove the potty drills and shaming, the rest of the book is fine.

    A Potty Training How-to!

I cannot talk enough about this book! I tell every mother I know who has not potty trained to ignore all they hear and buy this book! I potty trained my 19 month old with this program in three days. yes, three days. We leave the house without diapers!

I looked at about 15 other books and none were as good or as short as this one. I also knew at 14 months my son was ready to be potty trained but had a hard time finding something that would teach me what to do with a child who is still learning to talk but clearly understand me. I found it in this book. It works on all kids who have control of their inner muscles which form around 18 months but can be as early they say as 12 months.

This book is practical, easy to follow and literally tells you what to do in recipe fashion. For example, it gives you a flow chart for day one and a 3 page chapter on what to do in detail. The it helps you evaluate what happened for you and your child on day one and gives options for how to proceed to day 2 depending on how day 1 went. Then it does the same for day 2 through day 5 and onward. It is not slow and methodical like a turtle working over time. It gets in gets it done and then helps you work on maintaining the training over time.

I would also recommend the Once upon a Potty and Elmo's Potty Time.

    The Best Potty Training Program!

I am a very happy mom after using this program! My son is 2 1/2 years old and I chose to wait to potty train him on my summer off, since I'm a teacher. I have been researching potty training programs since he was about 18 months old and started showing his first 'readiness signs.' My daycare provider gave me a head's up about this program, so I looked into it. Potty Boot Camp was the best laid out method I had ever seen! I purchased it on a Friday night and implemented it Saturday morning 'that's how easy a read it is'. At first I thought I had a new puppy in the house, but by the following Friday my son was using the potty regularly! It is so wonderful to watch his face light up in excitement and I never knew going to the bathroom could be such an emotional event :'. I am one proud mommy and think this is the most consistent, easy, and flexible potty program out there. This is the best money you will spend and it will save you hundreds in diapers!

Is an awesome book, it ONLY works if you follow the advice on the book. My daughter is very very proud of herself for her accomplishment, she's only 26 months old. There is no shame, or punishment. Is teaching the child responsibility. I absolutely recommend this book. Is funny when people say it doesn't work, it works if you put the work into it. I wish I would have had this book with my first daughter 3 years ago.

A great book for those who thrive working in a schedule! My son

A great book for those who thrive working in a schedule! My son is 28 months old and we had him trained in 2 days, with about three accidents because we couldn't get him to the potty in time after he told us his urge!
My suggestion is to use this book as a tool in training but not to follow word for word. We found that tweaking a few suggestions from the book worked better with our sons personality.
I don't believe a book can work 100% for every child, but taking the time to read this through several times and adjusting to your child's needs and personality, this book is an awesome tool!
Our son was very excited during his training and has a lot of pride in "go potty by self!" Good luck and happy training!

    Works like magic!

Wow! I don't think my son would have ever been potty trained if I never found this book haha. My son is 3 years and 2 months old. We tried right after he turned 3 to potty train him and he was a mess. He was so sad and against it, so i gave up until I found this book. Day 1 went so perfect. By early afternoon he was telling me he had to go potty. He only had one little accident the first evening but stopped himself and finished in the potty. Day 2 I didn't do it the naked way because I thought he got it down the first day. No accidents on day 2 and still no accidents during the night. I can say that this is the best method to potty train stubborn 3 year old boys! I am excited to try this method on my other son in a year. Thank you Suzanne!
