Novella that slightly disappoints...
I've been a fan of Oates' writing since experiencing her signature style in college. This story (only 80 pages long) is signature: dark characters, tortured analysis, disturbing experiences, an almost unforgivable disconnect between what should happen and what does happen. This story isn't high or adventurous. It's short and depressing, but Oates' style is always engaging. The problem for me was the stilted ending left me disappointed, no explanation, no reason, just it is...If you enjoy Oates, you will understand the story, but you may feel unsated by the end.Was this review helpful?
