    Fascinating

Certainly not a fast read. This book provides a great historical backdrop of Dante's period in time. It is concise yet detailed enough to be vivid in style. Obviously from my 5 star rating I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read this for a buck. Don't let the super deal dissuade you. If you have any interest in this topic or period in time this is very insightful.

Highly Recommended -- check it out

It discusses Dante, Knights Templar, the Crusades, Dante's banishment from Florence, Dante's concept of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory, and the fights of the Pope with Knights Templar.

Recommend if interested in history and the arts

Couldn't put it down because of the fascination of the time period and the religion as it was practiced. Because Dante and his Comedia is mentioned in other novels to know what he may have been thinking when he wrote it will add to the enjoyment of those novels.

    HORRIBLE

This book is practically unreadable, it's so bad. I don't know where or how he did his research, but it's just another in the long line of anti-Catholic bashing drivel that passes off for scholarship. I should have known it when they said that Dan Brown was influenced by it.

A Seminal (and Readable) Piece of Work

Like that of William Shakespeare, Dante Alighieri's influence is profound, not only upon literature but also upon history itself. His greatest writings underlie the entire development of renaissance literature. Written in Italian, his work is not as widely known among speakers and readers of the English language. This book is a useful approach to understanding what Dante accomplished, and why it is important to us even today.

Don't bother. It reads like a term paper in graduate school

Dante is mentioned in relation to Beatrice, his unrequited love, during the first few pages of this book. We don't hear about him again until about page 93, and this story ends around p. 112. The remaining pages is a totally different essay on mysticism. There is some info. on Vergil, and a lot about the knights templars but there is no attempt to integrate this information with Dante's story. I'm glad I read Dante's Divine Comedy, but found out more information about Dante from Dan Brown's Inferno than this wispy, unstructured meandering journey.

    Just OK

    Interesting, but slow and disconnected.

    Expected more content and insight.
