    The truth comes further out

    This is the most detailed treatment yet of the battle which is certainly one of the most important of the Civil War. It opened the door to the deep South and made possible the capture of Atlanta just in time to influence the 1864 fall elections. After McKinney's pioneering 1961 work on the Army of the Cumberland and Thomas, Cozzens explains more fully how irrelevant Grant's contribution to the battle of Chattanooga was, and how incompetently Sherman performed. Cozzens also documents how the history of this battle was falsified before the echo of the gunfire had died away. Cozzens allows us to better understand George H. Thomas - the general who 'saturated the battle with military talent' and thus prevented what would otherwise have been a draw at the very best for the Union, that is the crowning disaster after Chickamauga. A must read if you want to really understand the western and ultimately decisive theater of the Civil War.
