Former Reviewer Didn't Get An Autograph?
Norman Spinrad, like most writers, has gotten better with age, but don't listen to any balderdash about the "poor quality" of THE SOLARIANS. Maybe the previous reviwer feels he could match this or any other Spinrad work? Ha.Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. A special place of dishonor
When I had only a 4,000 item SF library I once decided to search my stacks for the worst book. I was searching for a gag gift for a 'Dirty Santa' exchange. This was it. --- But at the party I realized there is a special place for books this bad and managed to get it back. This was instructive in that he later wrote some fine novels and you could see not to judge a writer by his first book, matter how bad it is. Also it is so bad it very much like a Mystery Science Theater movie without the commentary, classically bad. Get popcorn and enjoy bad. --- Why is it so bad? Spinrad at that time seemed to have had no idea of science, no apparent knowledge of physics. He had a hack plot and worse dialogue. As I went along reading in helpless fascination it was like watching a slow train wreck I couldn't tear myself away just to see how worse it would get and who would come out alive. --- If you think I am alone in my opinion do a google of the title for reviews - someone else had the same experience but reading in a public library. Unlike him I was reading a paperback edition at home and did manage to throw it across the room a few times before being sucked back in. --- However, if you are the definition of a well-read SF fan you should seriously consider this book as a modern classic of bad writing. --- Recommended is another work of his *The Iron Dream*, which Spinrad purposefully writes as a bad science fiction novel and literary commentary about the fascist subtext and symbolism supposedly written by an alternate world Adolf Hitler. --- For a better book of his also look at *Child of Fortune* or some classic psychedelic short stories in *The Last Hurrah of the Golden Horde*.Was this review helpful?
