I highly recommend The Truth About Style by Stacy London.
The co-host of TLC's popular show What Not To Wear, Stacy obviously didn't want to do a style book with merely page after page of how-tos. And yet, even though hers has been a life full of accomplishment, it wasn't time for a full-fledged memoir, either.
So she wrote a hybrid in which we get the best of both worlds; she takes the interesting life experiences she has had and melds them with the best style guidance out there.
Stacy picked nine women who because of different issues, body and mind, have struggled with style, and she relates their situations to what she's been through. Whether it's weight, insecurity, fearing age, living too much in the future, you name it, Stacy has dealt with it. In doing "start-overs", she helps the nine to accept themselves and shows them how style can help a woman see herself in a new way.
We don't just get the how-tos here, we get the whys ... why women put obstacles in front of themselves, why they treat themselves the way they do, why they opt out. Stacy knows, girl! And she dishes out great advice, and practical solutions.
Stacy could have played the celeb card and prattled on about herself. But by limiting this book to the valuable experiences she has had, which enable her to help the nine, she actually gives the reader more. What we end up with strikes the perfect balance (like a good outfit), and such respect for the reader is much appreciated.
Yes, this isn't the usual style book, or the typical memoir, and ... vive la difference!
For those who simply can't get enough of Stacy's brilliance on What Not To Wear, and I include myself in that group, picking up a copy of The Truth About Style was/is a must.
For years, while getting off funny lines and teaching style basics, Stacy has shown an incredible empathy for many of the women being made over on the show. Fans had gleaned bits and pieces about Stacy having eating disorders in her past, and a skin condition, but we didn't know the details.
Now we do, and those stories are extremely compelling (with her crisp, clear writing style and an excellent recall of details, at times you feel as if you're right there with her). The stories actually are quite heartbreaking, but the pain is thankfully eased a bit knowing that Stacy since has largely figured things out.
This couldn't have been easy for her to retell, but it was so worthwhile.
Stacy poured her heart and soul into this book and it shows. It's very well organized, yet there's plenty of fun, too, with her smart and hilarious observations. It is alternately inspirational, conversational, and educational.
The nine are all adorable, brave (especially breast cancer survivor Janis), and receptive to Stacy's teachings. The final makeover pics are all stunning, and the whole book looks great.
Women undoubtedly will see some of themselves in what one or more of the nine, or what Stacy, went through. In fact, many women who have read the book already have contacted Stacy with outpourings of thanks. Men will benefit from all of the insight, too. The Truth About Style is THAT great a book.

Different from every other style book!

This is just as much a general self-help book as it is a book about personal style. Being a huge fan of Stacy from the show, and knowing a little about her personal life, I had an idea of the content--but was totally blown away anyway. She comes across as a wise and caring friend, but who is also giving it to you straight. This is really a book about female empowerment, and how to deal with life's challenges, especially those outside of our control.
You might also be surprised how many struggles with weight and appearance this glamorous woman has had, and you will love her for it! She reveals her warts to help you deal with yours. Thank you Stacy. A timeless book I will re-read in every phase of my life.

Stacy is honest and so loving with the best sense of humor-reall

Stacy is honest and so loving with the best sense of humor-really she's the whole package. This book is so helpful to any women who has ever fought personal self sonfidence issues, (who hasn't)? I have watched every WNTW episode and love both Stacy ad Clinton. That's exactly why I noted them in my own book with gratitidue as they gave my dear Mama and I some of the best tv to watch together and fall in love with this endearing woman. I wrote to Stacy on FB-please, if you read this Stacy, look in my book, "I Love You MORE", by L.B. Cummings...LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR BEAUTIFUL BOOK!!!!
