    A reviewer

I listened to the previews just out of curiosity, and while I do not for a moment doubt LaChuisa's skill (See What I Wanna See was INCREDIBLE!!), I prefer the intesity and glamour that seem to come with Lippa's songs. I'm sure this is a great album, but Lippa's production seems to hold true to March's original work in pure form.

    I like this one better.

While I have heard both the Lippa and LaChiusa Wild Parties and I have to say that I am much, much more enamored with this one. While the other(Lippa) seems like a fun show with a lot of songs that are to be admired (Nothing can compare to "Old Fasioned Love Story"), The songs don't seem to work towards any kind of purpose other than to show off Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel, and tell us, rather than show us, who these characters are. This (LaChiusa) version is an actual book-musical, with songs that work towards a script(Though you can't have any sense of the book on a CD) and introduce it's characters in a way that I find more entertaining and fulfilling as a musical. Also, it does help that the performances are brilliant. Mandy Patinkin is wonderful, and he plays on the fact that Al Jolsten is freaking scary. Toni Collette plays Queenie like butter. Eartha Kitt as the aging actress Dolores simply melts my ears off in delight. The whole score evokes a classic sense of musical theatre(Fun numbers like "Eddie&Mae" "Best Friends," ballads like the beautiful "People Like Us.") while also evoking the era ("Tabu" "Marie is Tricky" "Uptown") And then overlaying a sense of danger for all involved. As a dedicated fan of the Musical Theatre, and indeed all theatre, I reccomend this CD whole-heartedly.
