Good for the older generation or hymn-lovers
Then Sings My Soul by Robert J. Morgan is a cute collection of the stories of how over 100 hymns came to be.Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
The design and layout of the book is excellent. I love the artfully ragged edged pages that make the book look tattered and old. With the book open, the music for the hymn itself sits on the left page astride the story on the right page. This is a wonderful visual - and also an excellent value if you're in the market for a hymn book!
Each story is a nice little bite-sized nugget of history behind the author and the situation that caused the author to write the piece. Each story is only roughly a page long, so your attention doesn't wander at all, and it's very easy to read numerous entries at a time.
Perhaps expectedly, each story wraps up with a nice little summary of how this hymn and/or the scripture it references can be useful in your daily life. Overall, this is a nice book. It's simple and interesting. This would make a very nice gift, particularly for the older generation who grew up on hymns.
Full disclosure: Thomas Nelson provided me with a free review copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. I was not required to give a positive review.

I confess I LOVE old time hymns! These are the songs I grew up with in church. These are the songs I can remember my grandfather standing in front of the congregation leading the congregation, "beating time" (fundamental for conducting) in a passionate display of worship. These hymns "reveal the faith of those who lived throughout history. In this book, Then Sings My Soul, Rev. Robert Morgan explored the stories behind some of the best-loved hymns and was fascinated by the accounts of tribulations, triumphs, struggles and hope - ordinary people who connected with God in amazing ways, sharing their experiences through song."Was this review helpful? Of the 150 songs explored in this offering, most are somewhat familiar if you've got a little history with traditional church music. Many of the songs that were unfamiliar to me still had intriguing stories that I enjoyed. For each hymn, there was one page of the actual music and lyrics and then a second page with a story about the author and the song. To actually be able to play from this book, however, it would be better if it was spiral bound and could stand open.
Overall I found this book to be inspiring as I was given a window into some of the most powerful hymns of the Christian faith. As a songwriter I really enjoyed reading the back-story of what led these writers to create and craft songs that have had a lasting impact on our world.
As a fledgling pianist, I also love the fact that every song whose story was portrayed also had sheet music available within the book. So, not only was I able to read this book, but I was able to play the songs within it as well! I was in Heaven! =)
I really like that there are complete indices by hymn title, first line and songwriter at the back of the book. This is very valuable when doing a quick search for a particular hymn or carol. I like the special soft cover, French flap cover design, jagged edged paper, which gives it a classic feel. I loved the write-ups on each hymn whether about the writer of the lyrics or the composer of the melody. There are helpful teaching illustrations and introductory remarks for song leaders, music ministers, volunteers and lay leaders. These hymns have stood the test of time!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It would make an excellent Christmas gift for pastors, music ministers, musicians and Christians in general as a personal or family devotional. One hymn and its story for each new day!
I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers for an advance reading as part of their Booksneeze bloggers program . I was not required to write a positive review and therefore, the book review is 100% my own opinion.

I found this book really inspirational. I knew there was some sort of significance behind these hymns, but there were some stories I'd never even heard about. Some are sad, some are happy, but each made me want to praise the Lord for what He has done. Without His work in the lives of these songwriters, we would not have the hymns we sing today. And without His revealing of His Word to the writers, they would not have the powerful lyrics that compel us to bend in adoration to our Creator and Savior even to this day. The best way to praise the Lord is to sing His Word back to Him, and many of the songs do just that. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Sing to the Lord!
I love singing hymns and songs of praise to my Lord, and this was a great read for that! Then Sings My Soul is a book written containing many of the hymns we sing today. It not only has the hymn on one side of the page, but it also has the story behind the hymn and translations as applicable. I have found that I appreciate many of the songs that I sing everyday a bit more after reading this. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. This is also a great book to incorporate into your devotional time. I have found that it has helped me to lavish and reflect on God's love for me as a sinner and as His child. I look forward to sharing this book with my family and friends. I also look forward to continuing to use this book in my spiritual walk.
It is amazing to think of what went into not only writing the songs but also putting them to music so that they could be used for worship. The Lord is good and we should sing and praise His name!

Great addition for Devotional reading
As a music lover, this book caught my eye as a way to learn a bit more about the story and history of the songs and hymns that I enjoy which have been passed down through the ages. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
I like that way that it's presented. The songs are divided by theme including Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Patriotic and Other Favorites. On the left hand side of each page you'll find the song and on the right side is the story behind the song, words, music and translation when applicable. It's quite amazing if you ask me, all that went into composing each of these songs which have become a part of our lives and repertoire. Learning a bit more about them helps me appreciate them even more.
I've enjoyed studying through this book with my family as we look up the song in our collection or find it on You Tube and listen to it as we read the story behind it. It's been a wonderful addition to our time of daily devotions and reflections.
There are precious treasures that can be drawn from each story and its history. Some songs are written by one individual, and in the case of others, it's been the effort of several individuals combined. Some of them are well known composers, song writers or historical characters. In other cases, it's been a seemingly obscure individual that received the inspiration to do so. One of the things that stood out to me about this is how each of us has the possibilities to make positive contributions to those around us in small or large ways.

Very interesting and fun to read!
This is a collection of 150 hymns and the stories behind the songs. The left hand page has the sheet music and the right hand page has the history of the song and/or author. Broken down into Christmas, Easter and All time favorites, this is a beautiful book with the edge of the pages rough like in an old hymnal. The stories are uplifting, informative and encouraging. It's always so inspiring to read about what some people went through and to see how they never lost faith and were still able to praise God in everything to the point of writing a wonderful song that is still sung today. The inspiration that lead to some of our favorite hymns is interesting and being able to read the words and the stories behind them give them a whole new meaning. I know that when I hear some of these songs again I will be thinking about the situations that the author was in when he/she penned these powerful words and the song will have more impact. Was this review helpful? Highly Recommended. A Great collection!
Then Sings My Soul (Special Edition) by Robert Morgan indeed is a delightful collection to own, and I am so grateful to Booksneeze to make this book available for review. It is a collection of 150 hymns for Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, general all-time favorites, etc. Each hymn is presented in a two-page format, the left page is the music score of the hymn, and the right page is a devotional styled story behind the hymn. The music score is written in an easy to play format, and being someone who enjoys playing piano, this book is really a great compilation to have. Then Sing My Soul includes some of the hymns that I love the most, for example: He leadeth me, Be Thou My Vision, And Can It Be That I Should Gain, Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, This is My Father's World, 'Tis So Sweet To Trust in Jesus, It Is Well With My Soul, Take My Life and Let it Be, Amazing Grace, The Old Rugged Cross, I Surrender All, and the all-time classic children hymn, Jesus Loves Me This I Know. It also includes the newer 'Because He Lives' by Bill and Gloria Gaither. It is so encouraging to read the story on how the Gaithers wrote 'Because He Lives'. It was during the sixties when racial tensions were on the rise in America that the Gaithers were blessed with another newborn that they were not expecting. They were pretty worried for the future of the new baby that Gloria was carrying. As they prayed, God gave them comforting words. In the words of the Gaithers, they said: While pondering and praying about these things, we came to realize anew that our courage doesn't come from a stable world, for the world has never been stable. Jesus Himself was born in the cruelest of times. No, we have babies, raise families and risk living because the Resurrection is true! Furthermore, this special edition comes with the deckle or jagged edge with French flap cover that gives the book a classical feel. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Then Sings My Soul
Then Sings My Soul By Robert Morgan, published by Thomas Nelson publishers is a compendium of traditional hymns as well as the stories behind the hymns. It is like a cross between a hymnal and history book. Each song in this book is analagous to a devotional prayer with a commentary that follows. The music as well as the words are provided for the hymns. For those unfamiliar with the world of hymns, this book provides everything you needed to know, from the lyrics, to the historical background behind the songs. The target audience of this book would include those interested in Christian history and those who like to sing hymnals or play hymnals on the piano. This book would especially make a great gift for anyone involved in a music ministry or music worship team of a church. I loved receiving and reading this book. I received a paperback copy, yet the pages inside were designed to look like a real, old-fashioned hymnal. I enjoyed reading the stories behind the various hymns that I grew up listening to. This would be a perfect gift for a choir director or music leader at a church. Was this review helpful? Great Christmas Gift!
I recently received my copy of Then Sings My Soul by Robert Morgan. This book is a compilation of various famous hymns common to Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Patriotic Hymns and other commonly sung well known hymns. Not only do you receive the hymns (and sheet music as if a hymn book in itself) but along with the hymn itself, you get a wonderful story behind each hymn. Was this review helpful? I personally grew up in a small country church that sang only hymns. It wasn't until my early teen years that I was really introduced to what is more common in worship now as the praise songs and contemporary Christian music. So many (if not nearly all) of the hymns in this book are near and dear to my heart. They are songs that when sung or heard remind me of my childhood and especially the small country church my grandparents still attend. The Sunday mornings listening to the 4 part harmonies in that building to me IS the definition of worship!

Wonderful Gift Book!
I play the piano at church and love the contemporary music, but I am also a big fan of the old stand-by hymns. If I know that there's a touching, interesting, or inspirational story behind those hymns, I am all the more drawn in to the song. Thanks to Robert J. Morgan's book Then Sings My Soul, I can throw myself into both the music and the story behind the song. This book provides both the music as well as the stories behind 150 of the best-known hymns. This would be a fantastic gift for a church pianist, worship leader, or anyone who loves those old hymns. It is a beautiful book and one I would highly recommend. Was this review helpful? Inspirational and Educational
Then Sings My Soul is a wonderful collection of hymns and the stories behind them. So many times, we sing the words without understanding their inspiration. For example, one of my favorite hymns is "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee", and I was surprised to find out that it was inspired by the Berkshires, a beautiful mountain range a few hours away in Western Massachusetts. Was this review helpful? Some stories are inspiring, such as how "I Surrender All" came to be written by a man wrestling whether to remain as a teacher or go into the ministry. Other stories are of historical interest, such as the author of "Rock of Ages" called John Wesley "guilty of satanic shamelessness".
One nice feature is that the music and all of the verses are included for each hymn. Many times, the later verses are left out of our hymn books, yet at times these are the most inspirational of all. For example, "O Holy Night" includes a verse about the elimination of slavery, yet it is seldom heard today. Curiously, this book does not include the second and third verses of this hymn, and only has part of the first verse.
I wish that the author had included some modern songs. Only two songs in the book were written in the last 50 years, and I would love to know the history behind some of the praise songs we sing today.

Great for those who love music!
I'm a music lover so this book was great for me. I recognized most of the hymns and love that the origin of each is included. (Which is the reason I wanted this book to begin with.) It was amazing to see that some of the songs I remember from childhood date as far back as the 7th century BC, and that most of my favorites are nearly 300 years old! Most interesting, to me, was how each song came to be written in the first place. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
And it's not just about hymns; there are several very popular songs included such as "America the Beautiful," "The Star Spangled Banner," and more. I love knowing the origin of the songs that I learned as a child, and that my children have learned. I especially love that each song was inspired by Scripture even though so many today don't acknowledge their link to God at all.
If you have a music lover in your family, or even a friend who would appreciate a book such as this (or a music minister), I recommend adding this book to you list for the upcoming season of giving. Not only will you be giving a great gift, you will be giving a great blessing as well! (On the downside, I don't see one who doesn't like music or hymns enjoying or appreciating this book.)

Great Gift Book
I caught myself singing and humming all the way through this one. Then Sings My Soul is 301 pages of wonderful and dearly loved old hymns. Also included are storeis and devotionals about each song. I especially loved the tattered edges of the pages. They reminded me of a much loved and used old hymn book. Many of the songs took me back to my childhood. This book would make a great present. I know almost a dozen people that I could give this book too. They would all be delighted. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Hymns seemed to have run into disfavor with the Church and many churches do not sing these wonderful songs anymore opting only to sing the new contemporary worship songs being produced. I have no problem with the new songs and I feel that worship songs need always to be produced because our God is always to be worshiped. I do, however, feel that we should not throw out the old songs because there is much theology in these songs, many of them written from verses of scripture, example: Angels We Have heard On High which sprang from Luke Chapter 2.
Robert J. Morgan takes us on a journey through the hymns that speak of Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. The stories tell us of the men and women who brought these wonderful songs to us and the story behind them. Some of these songs were birthed in great pain and sorrow and when we read these stories we are filled with a sense of awe of just how great a God we serve.
"Then Sings My Soul (Special Edition)" is a delightful gift to give to others to help them get a new sense of worship in their lives. It helps to go back to our roots and fill our lungs with the songs that changed lives. I recommend it highly for everyone. Not only are we provided the background for each song but we are also given the words and music.

Then Sings My Soul
This special edition book has 150 hymns in it. They are mostly Christmas and Easter songs, with some Thanksgiving and miscellaneous ones thrown in. The actual music is on the left page, and the description and history of the song is one the right page. This includes a Bible verse, which is nice for reflection. While the songs are not necessarily alphabetical, there is an organization to the book and many ways to look up songs both from the front and back of the book. Seeing as how the book is paperback and isn't huge, one needs extra books or some sort of clip to hold the pages down. The music is by no means a drawn out solo, but there is enough to hear the song. Notes for the left and right hand of piano are given. Lyrics are included, too. To test out this book, I went to a piano and played. The songs sound nice. Depending on one's denomination, some readers may only recognize a good portion of the Christmas songs and a few others. Still, the other songs have nice melodies and sincere words. Overall, I recommend this book to musicians--especially pianists--and hope Thomas Nelson offers more music books for review. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
