Not Suitable for All
This book was read to my son in his pre-k class. I first learned about it at bedtime when my son announced there was a book he never wanted to read again. After telling me what the book was, he asked if we had nightmares in our closets. So while it is a good book for many, not all kids are ready to be introduced to the concept of nightmares in the closet. It might have gone better for us if we had read the book at home so we could discuss the story rather than suddenly learning at bedtime that he was worried about scary stuff. Knowing my son, I would not have picked this book to read to him yet, and I imagine most parents will know whether their kids are ready for this book or not.

preschool age book
This book was one of my own childrens' favorites, and now as a preschool teacher I am on my 3rd or 4th copy. Kids love to be scared by a monster who turns out to be friendly, and this book delivers. It can be used with a child who wakes up with nightmares, or anyone who sometimes gets scared---it canbe better than "monster spray". I'd also recommend the other Mercer Mayer books that are similar to this one, THERE'S AN ALLIGATOR UNDER THE BED and THERE'S SOMETHING IN THE ATTIC.

Adorable story with a twist-ending.
My 7-year-old son loves this book! It's a great way to help young children understand fantasy, and it has a funny twist at the end. The simple text is easy for a beginning reader to read on his/her own. The illustrations are adorable! We read this book over and over, and I've even read it to a preschool class when working on the topic of real versus fantasy.

great book
My 3 year old son and I saw the HBO show that featured a reading of this book and that is what made me want to get it for him. It has the boy using a pop-gun instead of a bendy-sword like on the show but that just made him like it more. I really think it changed the way he viewed the 'monsters' in his closet.

A favorite for three generations
My sister and I found this in the college library when doing a project on humorous speeches for a speech class. She bought one and read it to her kids, then I did the same. My oldest now has it and reads it to his sons. I'm now buying another for children of friends.

I Finally Found It!
I am so excited!!! I finally found this book again! My mom used check this out at our local library and read it to my sister and I. Now since I have my own daughter and we're starting to buy her books and we were saying how great it would be if we could find this one again. B&N have made me one happy camper. This book is absolutely superb for children of all ages.

Great book!
My kids (6, 4, and 2 years old) just adore this book! My 2-yr-old can practically recite this book verbatim, and our newborn is sure to grow to love this book as well. His experience with this book began in utero! It's a great story for all ages, and it addresses a common concern for kids -- the monster in the closet just waiting to emerge at bedtime. This book dispels the frightening image of that monster. Mercer Mayer is one of our favorite children's authors, and this book is one of his best, we think. Best of all, the story is engaging enough (and short enough) that I don't mind reading it to my kids once or twice during the day as well as before bed at night. I definitely recommend this book for kids of all ages.
