My favorite book since I was 7 years old!

I remember reading this book when I was seven years old. It made such an impression on me that I went looking for it in a library as a senior in college. I sat in that public library and read it cover to cover all afternoon. Years later, after telling my oldest child about it, I ordered it from Barnes & Noble. This book has been and will remain my absolute favorite book!

This was my favorite in 7th grade!!!

I was a 7th grader in the 1960s when I read this book, mandatory reading at the time. I loved this book so much that I read it over and over again. It is solely responsible for my early addiction to reading!!! As an adult in my 30s I decided to do a search for it - before the Internet age. I found it at a used book store and promptly had it shipped - even though it was both ratty and outrageously expensive ($75.00). I was just delighted to have a copy! Today I have purchased 4 copies of the paperback and intend to share with all the precious young girls I know. If it has only half the impact on them as it did on me, then they will be happy readers for the rest of their lives!

I read this book at least once a month in middle school, I'm in High School now and I think I'm going into withdrawal from not reading it in over a year! :) This is a beautiful book that I love to read over and over again!

    Absoluty wonderful!!!!!!!!!

I read this book many times when I was younger. I would stay up late every night until it was finished and then I would start reading it again just to make sure I didn't skip over anything important. I have searched everywhere for this book and hadn't found it anywhere except at the Library. I even went last week to an antique and rare book store and the lady looked it up on the computer and told me that it wasn't in print anymore and that it would now be around $50-$75 if I did find one. This book is so wonderful that I think every young adult should read it.

Years of Searching Come to an End!

I, too, loved this book as a young reader. It was my favorite in the school library, and I rechecked it many times. For many years I've tried to find a copy, even doing several out-of-print searches, to no avail. I was so excited to find that it has been reprinted. I have already received and read my copy, and now I'm ordering a copy for my sister for Christmas. She also loved this book. My fourteen-year-old daughter is reading my copy, and she is enjoying it, also. The story is wonderful, with strong moral values upheld. There is nothing objectionable in the book, and I would highly recommend it to everyone, even adults.

A great love story, not just for little girls!

I loved this book so much as a young girl, and thought I'd never find it outside a library. I was thrilled to discover it here and am giving it as a Christmas gift to my mother, who never read it. The story of a little girl's growth from a shy, lonely orphan to a young woman with the confidence to run her own business enterprise in rural North Carolina in the early 1800s, and the sweet and inspiring romance that unfolds with it, are not just for children!
