THE THIRD WAS NOT HITLER. IT WAS THE PEOPLE
Burleigh does not examine the higher echelon of the Third Reich. He briefly mentions people like Hitler, Himmler, Bormann, and Speer. However, the book examines, in detail, the culpability of the average German that made the horror of the Third Reich possible. The most chilling part of this read is that it is possible for history to repeat itself. We may believe that we are all to sophisicated to follow a new Hitler. However, many of the aspects of the Third Reich's history are resurfacing in the U.S. and in Western Europe. Therefore, making anything possible.
