    nineteenth century India romance

Jane Barnaby and her guardian Patrick Reilly are on the Indian subcontinent constructing a railroad. When goldsmith John Kartauk angers the son of the maharaja Prince Abdar, Jane hides him. Abdar is outraged that he has not had the opportunity to display his displeasure with John he cuts a deal with the MacClarens, Scottish half-brothers, Ian and Ruel, to find John. The MacClaren siblings believe that if they locate the also vanished Jane, they will have John too. Roguish Ruel sees he can make a better deal by helping Jane get John to safety beyond the reach of the maharaja and consequently his son. The escape attempt fails miserably leading to a horrific mishap. Ruel holds Jane culpable for the failure and vows to avenge the catastrophe by sexually humiliating the woman he loves. ---- This is a reprint of an early 1990s romantic thriller that brings to life late nineteenth century India through mostly the eyes of Jane, but somewhat through the male support cast. However, the deep look at the environs is a two edged sword as the background at times overwhelms the plot. Still in spite of not being among Iris Johansen¿s top works, fans of the author will enjoy watching the escapades of the lead duet, a likable pairing of distrusting souls in love and hate while wondering which emotion will conquer the other. ---- Harriet Klausner

    I Also Recommend:

Good, but left me with questions.

This book was amazingly good, being the first I've read by Iris Johansen I intend to find more by her. However I was a bit peeved with out it ended. I wanted to know more about what happened with the masks, what they were made into and Kartauk. I wished there had been another chapter set a year later to let us see if any of the endings hinted at came true.

The back cover is also rather misleading. I first thought that almost the entire book would take place in Scotland, when in truth only a small portion takes place and not for a good while in the book.

    Overall a really great book

This has to be one of my fav's from Iris Johansen. They travel to so many places, interact with so many cultures, and we can't forget the animals {the elephants are my personal favorite. But what I loved the most, it's not JUST romance. There's also action, suspence, tragedies, anger, some comedy, and sex! All mixed in one!

    Great book

This is definitely one of the greatest books I've ever read. Ms Johansen knows how to weave a good story & to create a heroine that will impress you with her strong will &endurance. I've never seen a heroine so intense and dependable and independant. This book moved me. I usually like hot romances but this one touched me. Thank you, Miss Johansen.
