As an engineer, I wouldn't say that this book is very scientific

As an engineer, I wouldn't say that this book is very scientific. It reminds me a lot of the dean of athletics during undergrad. There's a lot of great information, and it's usually to the point, but it repeats itself over and over and is full of anecdotes to continue repeating points over and over.

That said, I really enjoyed the message of this book: swimming can be effortless. I like that Terry encourages everyone to just swim. It's not about the perfectionist metrics as much as getting in the pool and patiently going through the steps. By committing to perfecting your stroke and increasing your skill, you can safely achieving whatever goal (time, distance, health) you have.

I thought the illustrations were very helpful, and the drill instructions were well communicated. The structure of the drills and their progression could have been better communicated and more consistent, but that's nit-picking. For $14, I wish the book addressed butterfly, breaststroke, and backstroke. Apparently, I wanted "Swimming Made Easy." But I bought "There's a Drill for That" as a companion to this book.

    It works !!

This book is a miracle!! You will learn all what you need for freestyle cut in so little pieces, so simple to do that finally you will really improve your freestyle. Everything is so simple to do, so clearly explain, so rapidly improved.... this is the truth, nobody told you before. It might have 5 stars, but it has only 4 stars because, Terry Laughlin the author wrote two orther wonderful books : 'Swimming made easy' (teachs freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke),and triathlon swimming made easy' ( open wter swimming and technical tips for triathlon) which are better because he imporved his teaching and his methods. However, I think that 'Total swimming' should always be red first because it is the simplest to understand completly his technique Happy laps.'Total immersion' technique is the best !!!! Fred

    Great book, real improvements

This book is written in an easy to read manner, and following the outlined training points in each chapter has improved my swimming and my enjoyment of swimming. Once each new skill clicks, I really understood why the chapters were written one by one. The only improvement would be a removable guide for each skill that you could take to the pool with you. A great book, with real guidance that works.
