Disappointment
I bought this for our 4 and a half year old grandson to use on the plane when going to Disney World. Since he does not know keyboard, it was hard for him to spot the letters. The screen is small and not well-illuminated, which is a major drawback. I would not recommend this to anyone.

Great toy
My son loves to use this toy. When he "gets" an email, he will spell the words he knows or he will ask his mom or me to spell a word for him to "text." Allowing a child to be able to spell words on the screen before he is able to actually write the words allows the child to see the word written and enforce spelling and reading.
As opposed to the other review, the fact Leap Frog used a QWERTY keyboard is a good thing. In our society, one should always know a keyboard, where the letters are, and how to type. While this will not help with typing, it will allow the child to start to learn where the letters are on a keyboard.1 out of 1 people found this review helpful.

Great for travel
Our almost 3 year old loves taking the Text and Learn out and about - it's great that she can hear the different sounds each letter makes and play a couple of simple games - one to ID letters (and navigate the QWERTY keyboard) and another to navigate with the arrow buttons and find shapes. We recently purchased this item for a trip and it was great to pull out periodically for her to stay entertained. The volume has 2 settings -but even on the loud setting it wasn't too loud to have on in a restaurant or around other people.

Text and Learn, for the boy who loves gadgets!
If you have a young child who is constently getting a hold of cell phones and other simular electronics, then this is the gadget for them! My young nephew of two recieved the Text and Learn for Christmas. I don''t think he let it down after opening it that day. The value in the Text and Learn is that it is geared for a child older than two, but has enough allure for the 'boy who loves gadgets' to get many more years of use from. As they grow older and discover numbers, letters, words, and counting.
