    Risk and Monopoly

This game is the perfect combination of two classics: Risk and Monopoly. Taking place on a large board representative of an island that you're settling, it requires that you expand your settlements through trade, roads, and the construction of more cities. Trading with other players, and the resource gaining of this game all make it interesting and challenging, while being simple enough to remain fun. Highly worth the buy, as it will easily entertain you for hours.

    Excellent Family Fun!

Our family LOVES this game. Though we're all over 12 years old, we wish we had discovered it several years ago -- our kids could have enjoyed it when they were 7+. We love to do side-trading, and create alliances. We're much bigger fans of this than Monopoly, though there are some similar themes in the two games. It seems to demonstrate some basic levels of economics and world economy -- esp. the importance of resource control and ports/trade.
We're on the verge of buying an expansion pack so that we can play with more than 4 people -- we are planning to have other families over to play (and don't want to turn it over to ONLY the kids -- my husband and I just wish we had more time to play!).
We have a new family tradition evolving in our home -- Tuesday evenings the kids get to design and make pizza for all of us for dinner (every one gets to put their own choice of toppings on), and then as we eat we play Catan! It's wonderful!

    more from this reviewer

One of the best board games ever.

A combination of Monopoly and Risk, this game is fun, interactive and intellectual. One thing that makes this game different from most is that you must play with each other and against each other at the same time. Another is that every turn, yours or someone elses, you are involved and get to do something.
    Who thinks up these things?

Most Intriguing Family Game in years

This game is genius. I understand it was first popular in Germany but once it got to the US my family caught on rapidly. This is my second copy of the game as the first is getting slightly worse for the wear and we also play the expanded Seafarer version (with pirates), which is an entirely different game. The unique thing about this game is setting up the board. Unlike Monopoly which only varies by who buys what and what dice are rolled, this game is different every time you set up the board and therefore a different strategy may be the winning solution! Buy it, read the instructions, and play it for fun.

    Great game

My husband and I have trouble finding board games that we both enjoy, but we both love this game. We've had a couple of "game nights" at our home, and they've been a big hit. Besides, once the gameplay gets slow/predictable (which I suspect will take quite a while) we can buy one of the extentions, I'm looking forward to getting the pirate one.

    Fun for the whole family!

This is a great board game for people who like "construction" computer games (Sim City, Tycoon, Caesar, etc.). It requires a lot of careful strategy, but there's still the luck of the dice to make things interesting. The real bonus is the way every game plays out differently because of the clever design of the game.

An amazing game ... highly recommended!

This is a wonderful game of strategy, where the game board changes every time! We have been hooked ever since we got it for Christmas last year, and have been giving it to all of our friends for presents! Get the expansion set if you have more than 4 players.

    Complex but very interesting

I had read many positive reviews of this game, bought the popular version and started a game with family. This is a game with a learning curve for sure...not especially good for young kids or those with a short attention span. Having said that, it is well thought out and challenging. It does take some time to set up and play and there are many rules. I would recommend purchasing this game if you already know someone who plays or a local club with players.

A must for every Geek and Nerd gaming collection!

Wear that badge proud, no geek game collection is complete without a table top RPG or Catan! Set on the fictional (and symmetrical) land of Catan your goal is to trade, barter and build your community. The game board consists of an interlocking border that will contain hexagonal pieces that represent different resources you will need to build roads, settlement and cities. No two games will be the same!
Have a large circle of geeky friends? Don't worry there are expansions!

    Good Fun!

This is a game that my whole family likes to play. All players get to have actions during each player's turn-this reduces lag time making it easier for the kids to enjoy.
The rules are pretty simple and by the end of the first game you will probably feel pretty comfortable with them and how the game works.

I really wanted to like it

I bought this game due to the great reviews it has recieved, but it seemed a little boring to me. It took nearly an hour to read and understand the rules. Then the play just took way too long. It says on the box should take approximately 60 minutes, but it took somewhere near 2.5 hours. Eventhough everyone is involved in every move, it just seemed very repetative and boring...really none of the 4 of us wanted to play again. We will try one more time, hopefully it is better the second time around, but there just didnt seem like there was much to the game...All you build is some roads and cities really

    Catan!

I just learned how to play this game a month ago and I just ordered my own set. The perfect mixture of strategy, skill, and luck. Monopoly and Risk all in one.

    A hit with our family

Got it for Christmas '09. 6-year-old likes it, although he doesn't fully comprehend the finer points. The 9-year-old gets it and loves it. And we parents love it, too. It's a hit in our house.

One of the Best Games Ever Made

I received this game as a gift about a year ago, and have proceeded to give it as a gift to most of my family and friends. I highly recommend it for anyone who likes games like Risk and Monopoly, but wants even more strategy.

    Very Fun!

Finally, a game my husband and I BOTH enjoy that doesn't take hours and hours to play....
As we both like strategy games, we tend to choose those that seem never to end. Gameplay with Catan is much quicker, but still very strategy-oriented. It takes a while the first time, but once you get used to the rules, it's great. Definitely a five-star game.
