This book was my introduction to the BDSM niche sub-genre

First of all, I don't know why the name Judy Mays is tagged. She was not involved in this books as far as I know.

This title the first BDSM book I ever read, and I have to say, I enjoyed it. I didn't know what to expect, but at the time I purchased the book back in 2003 I had just discovered erotic romance and I was pretty much buying every title that was coming out from the publisher (Ellora's Cave). The company wasn't as big back then, and they were only releasing about 3-4 books a month. Ellora's Cave wasn't the big "factory" that it is now back in those days.

The book treats the subject with sensitivity. It didn't "convert" me at all, but it did impress me and didn't put me off on the subject, in the least. I definitely recommend this title to anyone that enjoys erotic romance, particularly if the person has never tried this subject matter before.

The book is shortish, but it does deal with the emotional aspects as well as the basic mechanics of what a D/s relationship is supposed to be. It teaches the reader that a good Dom always exercises self-control while training, and that this type of relationship is all about trust, and fully consensual. The sub is not supposed to be a doormat.

Bottom line is that this goes a bit into the complexity of the lifestyle in enough detail, without scaring away people like me, who are not into it. The author did a great job as to that respect.

This book is not hard-core, but rather middle of the ground. Some scenes may be shocking to some people, but it is not extreme and/or violent, on the contrary. It goes more into the emotional aspects of what should be a loving BDSM relationship.
