Bucks the Jane Austen Model Nicely!

    Bad titles. Great historical fiction.

Because most romance novels set in the Napoleonic/ Regency/ Victorian periods follow the Jane Austen model, it's rare to get a glimpse of the time outside of ballrooms, drawing rooms, and grand country estates. But Blayney fills that niche nicely.

Traitor's Kiss follows the story of a betrayed spy, a woman who is definitely more than she appears, and the people they encounter as they attempt to escape Napoleon's France for England. I was blown away by the characters- they are rich and utterly human. Their world engages the five senses- it has texture, it has smell, and at some points you can taste the sea as they try to cross the Channel. There's a lot going on in a very short space, a thrilling plot, and some excellent intrigue.

Lover's Kiss was equally good, if slightly less believable. I had a hard time liking the heroine, Lollie, as she whined and manipulated her way into the hero's heart. But it was a thrill to see "Michael" turn up again, and I forgave her quite a bit because of his role in the story. One thing I absolutely loved was how Blayney dealt with the emotional and political fallout of the kidnapping that sets off the story. It affects everyone in world she's created and sets off a fascinating chain reaction. For her purposes, the kidnapping is more than a plot device that allows the heroine to be vulnerable and the hero to swoop in and save her. I don't want to give away too much, but I will say that it's truly refreshing.

I can't say enough good things about these two books and the world that Blayney introduces the reader to. Highly recommended.

    Boooorrrrinnng

This book was not only a waste of time but a waste of money. This author dropped the ball on the character interactions and couldn't make up her mind on whether she wanted the main character in the first story to be a beotch or fall in love. If you haven't bought this book please don't!

    2 Great Books in One!

I loved both stories...characters were and plots were refreshing from the other books I had recently read in the romance category. The second story was my favorite. Loved the characters. Can't wait for the next book to come out. Mary Blayney is a very good author. She keeps it very interesting.
