A guide for adventurous hearts
Living in Florida can alter one's perspective. Abnormal situations--year-round summer, swamp creatures, and exotic pestilence--become commonplace. N.M. Kelby embraces the abnormal in her writing. Her new collection of short stories, A Travel Guide for Reckless Hearts, brings us lively, risk-taking tales of love and longing and the odd and the bizarre. And the shocking, as in the story "We Are All Just Visitors Here," where a retired couple in Florida meet their newly adopted granddaughter. Unfortunately, the grandfather is still afflicted by his stint in Vietnam, homeland of the little girl. A news of coral snakes offers a chilling opportunity. Was this review helpful? Kelby writes with grace and wit, and a wonderfully twisted mind, similar to her fellow Floridian, Carl Hiaasen. Reckless hearts indeed. These stories form a travel guide for timid hearts, too.
