Overview: Reading Lichgates is a requirement before picking up
Characters: Kara has always questioned authority but now she must learn to lead to save Braedon and Ourea. She pushes Braedon away to try to protect him and he does the same to her – which only makes their situations more dire. Braedon is a tortured soul who must question the limits of his Blood bound or risk losing everything that’s dear to him. I think their characters definitely evolved from the first book. They have become not only more mature but also have a harder time resisting very adult urges. The other characters from the first book share limited page time and the only one that definitely feels more developed is Gavin. Of course, Carden is my favorite character. He plays such an excellent villain.
Plot: I thought that this book had less of an epic feel than the first. The primary plot seems to be Kara and Braedon trying to figure out a way to be together, despite all odds against them. There are a few great action/torture scenes but it’s feels tamer than the first book. Still, the storyline is compelling to read and I found myself finishing Treason much faster than Lichgates.
Ending: Like the first book, it is obvious that the story isn’t over. I’m anxious to figure out what the next stage is for the characters, but this definitely didn’t end as a cliffhanger.
(I received a copy in exchange for my honest review as part of the blog tour.)

Review: Treason, by S.M. Boyce
This is a review of an ARC copy of Treason
I don’t think I’ve had as great of a reaction to any book as I have this one; well not since I read The Grimoire: Lichgates back in February. S.M. Boyce comes back with book two of the Grimoire trilogy, and comes back STRONG! I honestly didn’t think Lichgates could be topped on my all-time favorites list. Treason surpassed it with flying colors.
For those readers who have read Lichgates already, they know how talented Boyce is in creating the world of Ourea. For those who don’t know, let me tell you. Boyce’s world-building skills haven’t diminished since book one. They may even have gotten better. Ourea, all of its kingdoms, hidden nooks and crannies, the glimpses of the real world that the reader gets, they all show such beauty while having constant danger everywhere. Ourea is a dangerous place. It goes with the territory. Despite the danger it’s a place I’d love to visit if it were to be real.
What I also enjoyed were the new characters in Treason. All the old favorites from Lichgates are back as well, don’t worry about missing them. They come back even better this time! The complexities of all S.M.’s characters allow for plot twists, extensive and unfolding histories, hope and fear for the future. Each character has an agenda and each character influences others whether they know it or not.
It’s this complex world and character system that makes Treason, and The Grimoire Trilogy in general, what it really is. It’s an epic movie unfolding before the reader’s eyes. I don’t know if I was really reading the words on a page, as much as I was watching vivid images play in my head. I couldn’t not turn the page even when a chapter was over. I wanted to keep reading in order to find out what was in store for Kara, Braeden, and the rest of my favorite characters (especially the adorable fur-ball Flick).
I could go on for hours pointing out what I loved about this book. I also am confident in saying I have nothing negative to say…nothing at all…about this book. There are plot twists galore. There’s also one MAJOR twist that even after reading it a few times to make sure I read it correctly I still didn’t see coming. I can’t believe it really. It was so seamlessly and stealthily thrown in there, it was like “*POW* I’m a ninja.” If I had the space to do so, I would have been flipping and bouncing off the walls of my room. No lie.
I only have one last thing to say. Boyce, please for the love of all things bookily holy…please go write Heritage. I NEED to complete my journey through Ourea with Kara!!!!!

This series is just amazing! Treason, the second installment just proves it. I absolutely love everything about the world and the plot lines. There's always new secrets to be discovered and new epic battles to be fought. The world building still amazes me and I love every adventure we get to witness. Was this review helpful? So let's start with the characters that aren't the main two, like the original Vagabond (O.V.) and Gavin. I still don't trust the O.V. at all. There was something I didn't like about him in the first book, and it is still there in this one more. With Gavin, I kind of did a ninety degree angle. I say that because I don't completely love him, but I understand him and I actually felt bad for him in a few parts through out the book. I'm also really hoping we get to see Adele and Garrett in the future. I really like them as characters.
With our two leads, Kara and Braeden... I just love them more than ever. Kara literally goes through every ringer possible in this one and watching her keep it together through it all just proves how awesome she is as a protagonist. I'm also really happy of some of the things revealed in this book for her. On the other side is Braeden, whom I absolutely positively adore. Braeden is strong, and fierce, and loyal, and his heart is always in the right place. I just could not love him enough and I really hope he and Kara get a happily ever after.
I adore everything about Ourea and everyone in it (well maybe not everyone). See, a contemporary has to suck me right in the beginning or it's a lost cause to me. Fantasy on the other hand is my baby. It never ceases to blow my mind with how creative some authors can get and how well they can take us on a journey. This series does just that and I cannot wait to start Heritage!

Even better than book one.
This book was better than book one. I enjoyed book one the the author took a few chapters to develope a writing style. It was still a great book and original story. Book two has none of that. The writer as really developed the characters and kept the story original. This series is a gem. So glad i stumbled on to it.Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. It's rare a book pleasantly surprises me, but this book did just that. While I enjoyed the first book in the series, this one was even better. I won't ruin it for any readers but I was thrilled that this book threw something at me I didn't expect (since I am one of those people who almost always knows the ending of a book or movie well before getting there). Run, don't walk to purchase this and go ahead and buy book #3 in the series since you'll be buying it a two or three days later (depending on how fast you can read). Was this review helpful? Enjoy how S.M. Boyce took her time to develop the hero and heroine in book one, and how it continues in book #2. It's done in a way that you fall for them and enjoy it as it happens. Learn who Kara can trust and who fails. And then buy book #3 - that won't disappoint either.

Great series, wonderful story line
Very descriptive, you are taken to the author's world. I started book one as a free nook for pc book around Christmas, just had to spend my christmas on the this book and immediately checked for book 3 when I finished this one. I just could not wait to find out what happens next. Trying to go slower with the 3rd one as the next one will not be out til this summer. I do not want too much time between when I finish this one and the next one. I am already impatient for the last book. I do hope to read more of her work in future. The world she describes and the races that inhabit it are amazing. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.

I’m hooked, completely! I read S. M. Boyce’s first Grimoire Saga book, Lichgates a while back, made a note to read more, and well, let’s just say FINALLY, I can say, WOW, book 2 in the series, Treason went above and beyond in the “Leave me alone, I’m reading” department! Again I was thrust into Kara’s new world, and again, I was in awe of the non-stop action, the tension, the characters, their world, but most of all, I was impressed with the creative genius of the author and her ability to bring fantasy to life!
Not one page dragged, as I was taken from one point of action to another, all while feeling like I was watching everything happen on multiple screens. Every character felt important to the story, every action, every deceit and betrayal had me in knots. Kara is an amazing character, but without those around her, whether good or bad, could she rise as the power she is becoming! Filled with surprises, twists and revelations, Treason has built on the world created in Lichgates and made it an intriguing place to be, if only for a few hours.
As far as I’m concerned, Ms. Boyce has a gift that I am so grateful she has shared with readers everywhere. If you weren’t a fantasy reader before, I’m pretty sure this series will make you one!

She continues building the world of Ourea along w/the characters & you never tire of what you discover on the journey. As Kara &
Braedon face their trials & revelations they grow stronger individually & as "friends". They experience a lot of highs & lows throughout
the story that you will find yourself experiencing as well. There were even a few times when I would comment out loud on something
that happened, or I would be choked up & crying, yelling at someone in the book, or laughing, & my husband was asking me to repeat
myself or if I was okay. Ms Boyce ends the book w/revelations that will definitely surprise you. I know that it was the last thing I expected,
& had me diving straight into the third book even though it was the wee hours of the morning. . if you haven't already read the first book
in the series Lichgate I highly recommend that you do so, and grab the others as well, because you are going to want them handy when
you finish each one. Now I am off to finish reading Heritage, which is everything I have begun to expect from Ms. Boyce & more.

Things must get worst before they get better. No worse than that. Worse. Yeah, right about there. You didn't want a story where your main characters had an easy time of things, did you?
This is a book about things coming apart, and how strong people handle it the best they can. In the first book, the world seemed a bit dangerous, but nothing that couldn't be handled. In this, the characters find enemies nearly everywhere, unexpected allies who aren't necessarily reliable, and ugly secrets are discovered. Don't get me wrong, the book is not a downer. Kara and Braeden are still worth rooting for, and no character is one dimensional.
An exciting read.

The story continues from where Lichgates left off: a magical world on the brink of war, a girl discovering her true powers and a complicated but passionate growing love. Boyce hits her stride in Treason. The characters, even the so-called villains, become more real as Boyce unfurls their motivations and explores their layers. They are flawed, hurt and conflicted. I feel like I know them and I wonder how they're doing as I wait anxiously for the next instalment in the series. The plot gets better. How Boyce plans out the political jockeying and the deceit is genius. I delighted in each character's competing motives. Boyce knows just how to pit monsters vs monsters and her fight scenes are fan-flipping-tastic.
Treason is a perfect book. It's exciting, tense and funny -- while dealing with lofty themes such as redemption and betrayal. And the ever-evolving heroine, Kara, is kick-ass: "I won't let Ourea remember me as the pathetic girl chained in a cell because the Bloods beat me. To hell with that! If I go down, it'll be with a fight!"
Can't wait for the fight to continue with Heritage.

My head is still whirling with the unanticipated twists and terrifying turns in Treason by S.M. Boyce. I was thoroughly entertained and entranced by the deeper development of the characters, the mounting tension of the plot, and the ever surprising magic that Boyce continues to weave throughout this incredible series. As I was swept into this story once again, I realized how epic and extraordinary this adventure truly is, and I can’t wait to see what other surprises and developments lie in store for us next. What an enchanting and brilliant sequel to Lichgates! Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
Kara and Braeden captured my heart once again and delighted me as their relationship continues to grow and develop into something that neither intended. They are forced to come face to face with their feelings for each other. At the same time, their world has grown even more deadly with new and frightful developments that no one could have anticipated. Ourea is on the brink of war, and if that’s not enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, there are even more surprises waiting around the corner for them.
The incredible and amazing details that Boyce pours into this world and her characters will leave you stunned and breathless. Her attention to detail is exquisite, and this beautiful journey continues to grow in complexity and magnitude. I never grow tired of each of the places that are visited. I would love to see each of them with my physical eyes, and I would never want to leave.
S.M. Boyce continues to create a delightfully extraordinary story that is sure to win over countless fans of fantasy, romance, and adventure alike. I know where I stand – an adoring fan and devoted reader who can’t wait to read the installment of this superbly written journey of love, loss, hope, and intrigue. I dare you to read Lichgate and Treason and not fall in love with the beauty and danger of the world of Ourea!
