mapes gets even, but the problem persists
Mary Mapes was a CBS television producer, fired in the wake of the so-called scandal surrounding '60 Minutes'' treatment of the Bush/National Guard issue. She argues persuasively that the story was essentially accurate, that Bush did enter the Guard through favoritism and did shirk his duties, albeit CBS had violated its own guidelines by failing to determine the genesis of some of the accusatory documents. Ms. Mapes defends herself powerfully in 'Truth and Duty.' Her book would have been a blockbuster had she probed deeply into the reasons for CBS' capitulation to political forces, including her own firing. That's the big story here: an administration that since 2001 has cowed the media into presenting news according to its own designs, while abandoning the journalistic tradition of investigative oversight. Ms. Mapes only scratches this surface. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
