I would have given this book a four star rating, but because the end was so bad, I had to give it a three. The book was a little slow to start off. I felt very disconnected to the main character. She was not like anything that I would've expected from a human turned vamp who had no idea what was going on. She seemed very nonchalant about the whole thing. The descriptions were good, it was well written, and very easy to follow. It had a great plot and some very interesting things about vamps that I haven't seen in other books similar to this one. As far as the ending goes, it was totally unbelievable. It didn't seem like the characters at all. It seemed as if the writer decided that she was done with writing this book, and just wrote a quick ending. I was quite disappointed about it. I expected more since the rest of the book was so involved in all aspects of the characters. I found myself shouting, "Really? That doesn't make any sense! Why would he do that?!" I don't think that I will be reading anymore of the Blood Ties series unless someone can convince me that they get better. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone either, unless they just don't have anything better to read.Show Less

    An adult Twilight

This series has a lot of violence and several explicit encounters that would make this a poor selection for someone easily offended or embarrassed. If you love a good story and the above doesn't bother you then you won't be disappointed. itunes has the audio series reasonable priced.

    Really Good, Really Interesting

This book was actually really good. From some of the previous reviews I thought the book was going to have some really gory, gruesome descriptions, but there really weren't. It was nothing that would turn off a reader. The story is about an ER doc who gets turned into a vampire accidentally by the vampire who's trying to kill her. Which subsequently leads to a blood tie forming between her and her almost killer. The books shows how this tie affects the doc and how she has to choose between a vampire she barely knows that is helping her with the change, and the vampire who tried to kill her that she can't seem to resist. If you're looking for a vampire book that's not funny and quirky, but meaty and gritty I would recommend this book. It's a page turner.

    Worth Every Penny

I love the world that Jennifer Armintrout has set up. I even had to have the next books 2 and 3 ordered. The storyline is close enough to your basic vampire book that you understand it but original and gritty enough to grab you. The Characters are well developed and you can easly let hours drift by without realizing it. Overall bravo!

Glad I gave it a chance!

Despite mixed reviews, I gave this book a shot. I am so glad I did. The only part that really bothered me is that sometimes I would get a little lost in what the author was talking about and would have to back track to figure out if she was still in the present or in the past. I loved that there were times that I would almost forget how bad the bad guy really was. Overall, I enjoyed this book.

    Different

Ok so I have read more than a few of the vampire series out. This one was different in a few ways. I dont want to go into full detail and ruin the book for anyone.
While I have read Sherrilyn Kenyon (whom I love!), JR Ward, Lara Adrian, and a few others this story differs a little. I wasnt crazy about the main affliction in the story line because its kind of confusing to fully grasp a race of vampires set out to rid the world of vampires? However The characters were great. There was alot of darkness to the story line and the main villian character. The main character Carrie seemed to show the right amount of strength and weakness.
The romance was there but it wasnt like sappy love of my life stuff. It was more conflicted without the ending result being a pledge of love and life long bond like some of the other stories I have read.. This was kind of refreshing even though I go for that other sappy stuff as much as the next girl.
All in all the author has a great writing style. It was easy to read and in the first person. She didnt use a whole bunch of filler ie. descirbing the walls all the way down to their texture!
I plan to read the next one.
I have turned into a total vampire junky looking for my next fix!

    Engrossing

Truth be told I doubted this book could hold my attention but I was wrong. Carrie and Nathan make a nice team. Can't wait to find out what happens in their next encounter w/ the Soul Eater.

Different take of the vampire genre

It is a different take on the vampire world, where some are willing to extinct their own kind in order to salvage and protect the human race. I am thoroughly enjoying this new view and series. Highly recommend for any fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and such genre's to take a read of The Turning.

    Great spin on Vampires

This book was amazing to say the least. As a fan of Lara Adrian and J.R. Ward I was honestly expecting this book to be more like one of theirs, but in the end I was glad that J. Armintrout had a totally different take on Vampires. I'm a romantic at heart so I was a BIT taken aback by the ending of the book, but if I wanted a mushy romance novel I would've bought one. The triangle between Cyrus, Carrie and Nate was a lot more realistic than thinking you'd found someone who 'owns' your soul in short period of time. Can't wait to see what the rest of the series will bring.

A thrilling story of a girl's struggles in her new life!

Blood Ties Book 1: The Turning is a tale of a doctor who struggles at her occupation, and is told that perhaps she shouldn¿t have been a doctor after all. The character is a person the can relate to. Forced by her father to be a doctor, but cannot live up to what her father wanted. She encounters a patient who is gouged, and looks like he is not likely to live. She is disturbed by what she sees and tries to take second look and is attacked by a vampire. She now has to begin a new life as a vampire. She either sides with Nathan Grant, a vampire who is part of an organization to exterminate all vampires, or her evil sire Cyrus. The book is full of suspense, and filled with drama. Carrie Ames adaptation to her new life keeps the reader interested because of the new guidelines she must follow in order to maintain her health. Other characters in the novel are what most people would see as our fantasy characters. While the characters themselves are interesting and well drawn, the events that happen brings the reader though emotional ups and downs. A love story is mixed with the tale of survival. As the reader, we can almost feel her psychological struggles as she tries to find a way to get by in her new life and with whom she wants to side. This book is for anyone interested in vampires or looking to expand into the fantasy genre. It is a vivid and violently gruesome novel, while it has sensual moments mixed in the book. It is recommended for a mature reader.

    Move over Laurell K. Hamilton!

This book draws you in and gets you attached to the main character's life similar to the way LKH's Anita Blake series does BUT BETTER. I read this in one day and have already read the 2nd in the series, anxiously awaiting the 3rd to be released in August. GReat writing, great plot, great characters. Jennifer Armintrout is an amazing writer. It is hard t believe she is so young and doesn't have 100 books under her belt considering the excellent quality of storytelling she possesses.

    Wonderful book

I first bought this book in a grociery store, just because it was there, but when I started it I just kinda got sucked into it and I couldn't put it down. not only is it dark and mysterious at times, but it is also funny and heart warming as well. I cried on several parts. it's as if you can feel some of the characters pain. it's a must read.

    Very interesting

A very wicked adventure where the not so typical heroine finds herself torn between her heart or being true to her vampire blood after an 'accidental turning'. Will she follow her heart or be true to her blood?
