    Remember the Cold War?

Remember when 'Commies' sent a shiver down your spine? Did you ever do the duck-and-cover drill in school? How old were you when you truly grasped the meaning of a mushroom cloud, when MAD stopped being a magazine and started being a mantra you heard in your head every time the news came on? Twilight: 2000 provides a future-history of just such a devolution of world affairs, a third world war where MAD happens not all at once, but in driblets, only to be realized after all's too late. It also provides, more importantly, a framework for simulating how you or any character of your imagination would deal with the situations. Foraging for food, maintining vehicles in the absence of any manufacturing in the world, producing fuel, and fighting off bandits as well as bona-fide enemy troops. Oh, but the ravages of disease and radiation are simulated with a greater depth, the authors recognizing that absent modern medicine most trials and tribulations will come from such things. B&N classifies it as 'Young Adult.' Possibly. Those of us adults who grew up to the themes presented in T2k (first published in the early 80's), however, are the true audience, whether we were kids or have grown to adulthood or even grey hairs.
