    The Essence Of El

A terrific compilation of music for an artist who is very much underrated. El Debarge began his musical career with his four siblings-Debarge in the 1980's. Three of those tunes he co-wrote or sang on are covered here...Stay with Me, an often sampled beat for hip/hop, All This Love and the gospel tinged Love Me In A Special Way. However, since these songs are on Debarge's Ultimate Collection, I would've preferred that three other selections from El's solo work were included here. Tracks 4 through 12 are taken from El's solo work...El Debarge, Gemini, In the Storm and Heart,Mind and Soul. Tracks 13 through 16 are El's work done with other artists. What Artists? How About Quincy Jones-I'm Yours, Fourplay- After the Dance and Dionne Warwick-Reach out for Me, the latter is a slammin updated version with the Emotions singing background vocals. Can't keep better company than that! Overall, this collection shows El at his most diversified. Pop, R&B and Smooth Jazz, El can handle them all. The only thing missing is Gospel. Andre Crouch's The Lord Is my Light sung by El could have been included. This collection shows El's vocal magic. His joyous, angelic voice can transport you to another place. El is supposedly in the studio working on new music. It has been a long time for him. Heart, Mind and Soul was released in 1994. He has been sorely missed. So hopefully, more of his wonderful voice will be shared with the world! What a treat! But, until then, the Ultimate Collection will do just fine!
