Ultimate Iron Man, Volume 1

Not as good as other origin stories

The Iron Man origin story has been told and retold in various media, with various skill, and to various effect. True, Ultimate Iron Man is not Iron Man has he is more widely know. He is a very different character who behaves like no other Tony Stark or Iron Man who I have ever encountered. Even with that in mind, this is, I feel, one of the weaker Iron Man stories or, if not weaker, least believable and most divergant from any other story about the Iron Man character.

While the story is interesting, in and of itself, it is, however, completely inconsistent with the information learned about Tony Stark in the Ultimates comics, released prior to the publication of Ultimate Iron Man. I don't want to give away anything of plot, but suffice to say Ultimate Iron Man and Ultimates do not really converge as they should and as, it seems like, they were meant to.
