Great Character, slightly mixed message
Alfred is 'bullied' by a fish, a cat, and several other dogs during the story. They insult him about the way he looks, eats, and just about every aspect of who he is. Eventually he hangs out in the backyard by himself to avoid bullying--which is really really sad. Soon he meets a dog on the other side of the fence that he can relate to since the other dog cannot see him. This other dog turns out to be a pug and they become great friends and Alfred no longer feels unlovable. My small critique is the notion that Alfred discovers he is lovable in the same sense that 'birds of a feather flock together.' It seemed unfortunate that the only dog that identified positive qualities in Alfred was the same type of he is. Just something to take into consideration on a very cute and powerful book about the effects of treating others without respect. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
