This is the first Beaumont story and a great one at that! I have read all the Beaumont and Brady stories and Jance has created great characters and stories in books that can be read over and over again. I love this book because it's the story of Beaumont and Anne Corley. She remains a presence through all the Beaumont stories, so this book is a must read to really understand the back story that persists through the series. This book originally came out in the mid-80s, so I also loved the crime solving using the technology that existed back then. Reading the story now, it really makes you see how far technology has come. Overall, great read and one anyone should try!

Must read to continue series.

This book was well written but wasn't as suspenseful as I thought it would have been. I do have to commend J.A. Jance on the plot, I was not expecting that twist. If you want to read the whole series for J.P. Beaumont you must start with this book since it is his debut....

    It was ok.

I could have done without the sex scenes.

    Not my favorite book

This was hard to finish. I was not invested in the main characters.

    A little disappointing.

Without indentiins, the author gave away who the killer was (or maybe i am good with mystery fiction). Regardless, the plot lacked suspense entirely. Though some parts were decent, i was glad it was short. Not too bad given the sale price of $0.99

    Not what I'd hoped

I've seen the name JA Jance about a zillion times and I've always wanted to read one. I bought this one because is was the first in a series and only 99 cents. I'm not going to rip it apart, I just didn't enjoy it. The main character wasn't all that interesting and there was way too much focus on his budding relationship with the woman. It was told from the male lead's point of view, and maybe I like men to be a bit more manly. After a few chapters I just skipped all the sex and romance crap - it did not change the story at all. To be honest, I had to stop reading about half way through. I didn't care about any of the characters. Didn't care why anyone was dead or who killed them or why. I'll try another Jance from a different series though because I felt that even though I didn't care, it was pretty well written and the story went pretty quickly along. I just wasn't interested in what was happening.

    Cliché after cliché, staggeringly predictable

Who's the hero really gotta watch out for in the classic hardboiled/noir formula? You got it. I've just spoiled this one for you.

Aside from that, the main character is a walking cliché, the world-weary divorced cop who has to initiate his new rookie partner on the rottenness of the world.

Aside from that, it's an easy read, but I don't know why anyone would bother. Still, looks like there are a whole lotta folks out there who don't share my indifference to this first-in-a-series.
