One of my favorite series, if not my top

I devoured all 4 books in the series. The characters were so realistic, the experiences so believeable. I hated to finish the series, because I wanted more.

I was most interested to read this series of books, since my pat

I was most interested to read this series of books, since my paternal ancestors came from Scandinavia about the time of these stories.
I have visited the birthplaces of my grandparents and always wondered why they left such beautiful places to come to a land where they knew no-one
and did not speak a word of the language once they arrived in America. I have learned now that there was not enough money or food to sustain a family
a family on the small farms where they lived. This series of books is very true-to-life and a must for anyone who is interested in life as it was for their
ancestors.  The stories will make you realize what hardships they went through in order to provide a better life for generations to come.

Highly recommended for readers who enjoy historically accurate novels and geneaology, especially northern European communities.

Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg wrote a series of books, documenting the emigration of the people of his country to America in the late 1800's. These books are accurate accounts of the desperate need of these people to find freedom of religion and personal identity, as well as a more healthful and rewarding life. The day to day drama of life in a new country, their previous life in a small, worn out, tyrannically run country is a lesson in what our ancestors endured. Read all four, in order, for a true view of our ancestors. Being Norwegian, the letters of my forefathers during that time of their emmigration bear out this story.
