Rebellious and Fun!

This is a beautifully written book! Sexy, wild, unconventional and fun. As a collection of pieces in the life of a renegade lover of life, this book is wonderful. Comparisons to Jack Kerouac's ON THE ROAD are warranted, and like that book this reality-based fiction is best enjoyed in small bites. Each chapter can stand alone. Michelle Tea writes like a jazz musician, with great spontaneity and energy and passion, and her writing is alive. Like the characters she portrays, she writes "in the moment." Exciting and heady stuff.

Recommended for alternative & lesbian friendly readers.

Tea just has something...

Despite the fact that the book is self-indulgent, glamorized and romantisized, I love it. Valencia is the story of the underground Lesibian/Gay scene in San Fran and very much a study of individual Lesbians. Honesty is thrashing around in Valencia and you are able to meet it in the eyes. This auto-biographical novel is exciting and inspiring and sad all at once. I would say Valencia is Tea's best work (so far).

Good read,great writing style

Valencia by Michelle Tea was defiantly an interesting book. The 1st part of the book did not really grab me, but I kept going and chapter 8 to the end was really good. The characters in this book are many. Tea does a great job of telling the reader about each one though. Her writing style is unique and vivid; and that is what hooked me to this book. I defiantly want to read more for this author. This book was not life changing, but I am really glad I have it. I brought into my world a whole new definition of how differently people can live their lives and a new definition of dykes.

Great for 13 year olds

At nearly 30, I think I might be too old for this book's target demographic. I can see how at 13, I might have thought this story to be exciting and thrilling. As a jaded adult (sad to say), the story is just...too unbelievable. I realize this is fiction, however, it pretends to be non-fiction. The characters are sorely underdeveloped. The book ends abruptly and with little resolution for any of the problems. At the outset, the protagonist is positive and full of life and at the end she is lonely and jaded. Real riot grrls (and their books) do exist. This isn't one of them.

this book isn't for conservatives

I was completley blown away by the raw honesty Michelle Tea writes with in this novel. This is the best book I have read in a long time.

MICHELLE TEA DOES IT AGAIN

Michelle Tea writes in a style that is at once both hysterically funny and poetically sad. The only reason you may put this book down is to catch your breath...
